RAF Mildenhall 11/02 KC-135R wing icing

Post by Flogger23 » Wed Feb 16, 2022 11:12 am

Visited RAF Mildenhall on 11/02/22 not much happened but did notice some wing icing on KC-135R 63-8878 “Boss Lady” which I have not seen before, although I usually visit in the warmer months!

Icing greatly diminished after 5 circuits.

Also visited RAF Lakenheath on 12/01/22 and have just noticed this on an approach of F-35A 19-5476

The ice under the wings is caused by the cold soaked fuel in the tanks.....it appears on warmer days as well sometimes...

Hello Flogger23 nice pictures, noticed the ice build-up as well; quite common on larger jets ... it's the fuel indeed.
Greetings from the Dutch invasion on the mound last Friday and yes we had the majority and we only were with 4.... unlucky troupe nothing much going on there.
We tried to make it back to the continent late that night but tripped over the covid test requirement that the frogs put up and had to stay another day :-((

I was in John’s field with my partner, only one’s there most of the day. Have seen photos before of this icing U2s etc just first time I’ve seen it myself at Mildenhall.
