PIK early morning

Post by photojet » Mon Nov 04, 2019 4:52 pm

It was well worth the early start to catch this big guy departing Prestwick in the lovely morning light.

Not sure why some people can see the photos and others are blurred but from the 1June 2019 this Email from PhotoBucket

Photobucket currently hosts over 130 million photos for over 11 million free users! Effective June 1, 2019, new hosting limits will take effect that will impact a small portion of our image hosters.

What Are the New Limits?
Free hosters will be restricted to 25MB of hosting bandwidth per month. IF YOUR CURRENT USAGE IS OVER 25MB PER MONTH THIS NEW LIMITATION WILL AFFECT YOU.

What Happens If you Go Over My Bandwidth Allowance?
Free hosters, who use more than 25MB of bandwidth will have all of their hosted photos watermarked and blurred."

Sooo! If it's a Host Issue why does this affect some viewers & not others?... Genuine Question, as this is definitely on the boundary of any insight I might have!

Well it may say from the 1st June, but I think it's still being rolled out: my own photobucket account only got blurred within the last 2 weeks, and that's after I deleted most of the images on it. Impossible to get under 25MB/month. Google alone would scrape that much from what's left on my account, and there's no usage meter when I log in to show how much is being used. As for the blurring, it's possible that takes time to propagate out to all servers. The other possibility is that the people who see the images correctly are photobucket account holders who are logged in. Either way, this company is finished, and good riddance to them. You can't survive on premium accounts only. It's very tough to survive on free accounts only. An image host needs to find a balance, and photobucket have monumentally screwed up. They already killed off free hotlinking and tried to backtrack later on that. Now they've lost it totally.

I think that those who are seeing the blurred photos are over the free limit of 25MB on their own Photobucket accounts (like me), I've now deleted my own account (which takes 48 hours to process apparently). I never use it anyway as I moved over to Flickr ages ago.

No. I'm seeing them blurred even when not logged into photobucket (+cookies cleared).
Guests (non-photobucket users) are seeing them blurred too (which is essentially what I am to photobucket when all cookies cleared).

Fair enough, I'm totally mystified why some people can see them though. Very odd!

Well, as I said, maybe those seeing good images are themselves logged into a "good" photobucket account (not one over the limit, or a paid one).
Photobucket are also using a CDN so it may take time for the blurring to propagate to all servers. If so, the images will eventually blur for these random users too.

It's nothing to do with your own accounts, or if you have one or not.

It'll be the case that the images will have been cached previously whilst there's no blur (which happens when the poster is over their limit) and then you're being displayed the cached version rather than a current version.

When I looked this morning they were fine, looking now they are blurred because the cache has updated.

Never understand why people still use Photobucket.

Indeed, it could be a local cache, or it could be the CDN cache.

I know. It's a terrible site now compared to how it was 12-15 years ago.
Going to suffer the same fate as the once-decent ImageShack.
I look forward to them finally kicking the (photo)bucket.

Thanks to AF1 & EGVP for your input, it seems so simple now since you've explained it.
I agree that PB was an excellent resource until they messed it up but I'm delighted that I've now deleted my account, I just have to pay my annual Flickr subscription in a couple of days!
