A week at Mildenhall and Lakenheath (July/August 2019)

Post by Seacat192 » Wed Aug 07, 2019 5:19 pm

I spent from Monday 29 July until Sunday 3 August in Suffolk, photographing the comings and goings at two U.S. Air Force bases.

Monday (Lakenheath) turned out to be long day, as I stayed there for the evening arrival of the Saudi delivery flight, though the heat haze affected most of my taxying photos earlier in the day. Nice to get an Osprey making an ILS approach at LN during the afternoon:

Thursday, and more of the same, with time at both airfields. First up was the dash to Lakenheath for the Saudi Retro departures - got there with a few minutes to spare:

My final day, and Saturday was more of a social event with other GRs in Johns Field with a few aircraft movements thrown in:

Hi Trevor.

Good to see you as well!

Happy with the photos I got from the week. The Saudis were a nice bonus, as was the arrival of the C-146 on the Friday morning.

Hope to return again next year, but that will be decided around the end of the year!!

Thanks both.

It was a great week. Shame we just missed the TXs as they left Lakenheath, but I still had a great time. Good to meet up with both of you again.

Great shots and great to meet you

Are you coming east again for Waddington at the end of August for exercise Cobra flap , as someone comically called it?

Thanks Mike.

Unfortunately, I won't be heading over.

I'd love to, but my time off work is set by my employer (I get given a list of dates when I go back after the Christmas break) and due to the distances involved, it wouldn't make getting there and back a hectic journey. Having extra time off would mean not getting any pay for that period, and my wages aren't the best).

Believe me, I'd love to be there - but it's just no feasible to do for me.

Hi Roger,
A very productive week and some great variations, good to see you a couple of times :thumb:
KC10 ground shot is a cracker and the Saudi’s too, arriving in lovely light.
Seeing Paddy big game hunting in Suffolk is a rarity and lucky you didn’t get caught in the swat fire.
Keep up that good work you do, in awe of the commitment you give a really worthwhile cause. May get down to the West Country next year or sooner perhaps.
Regards Nick

Thanks Nick.

Likewise, it was good to see you, Jo and Monty! Thanks for your comments too :thumb:

Fairly sure I felt the air swish past my ear a couple of times, when Paddy was in full flight

A few more weekends to myself, and then it's back to being a Jolly Green Giant at weekends.

Let me know when you're down around this way.
