The Past Twelve Months (Helicopter Heavy!)

Post by lloydh » Mon Feb 18, 2019 2:19 pm

Some stuff from the past twelve months, hopefully I won't be lambasted for some of the 'not so military' stuff in here but thought it wasn't worth creating a separate thread! Most of them are parapublic as apposed to civilian/general aviation anyway.. Hope you like helicopters as that's what it mostly is. As always critique is always welcome

49. Getting to visit SANParks Air Wing in Kruger National Park was amazing and the work that they are doing is so important for future generations. Poaching is a huge issue in the park and as such it's a large part of their work as they've started taking rounds from poachers they've had ballistic protection fitted to the floors and the pilots now fly with body armour and a pistol for protection.

50. Vet Dr Peter Buss darting an elephant from the aircraft.
ImageSANParks Air Wing h125 by Lloyd Horgan, on Flickr

51. As we flew a four ship along the Sabie River there were a few hippos under the surface of the water that we hadn't seen and as such the four aircraft spooked them out of the water. Cool shot though!
ImageSANParks Air Wing H125's by Lloyd Horgan, on Flickr

52. Part of their work is also game capture and census within the park.
ImageSANParks H125 by Lloyd Horgan, on Flickr

52.5. This is what it's all for.. They had found this Black Rhino with massive injury to her foot after she had been shot by poachers. She had been walking on the wound for so long that she had worn away the sole of her foot, when we visited her in the Boma they were trying for the first time to save a rhino with an injury like this as it's usually a death sentence. They had cast her foot but obviously the challenge of making a cast for animal that weighs as much as rhino is no easy task!

A cracking and well curated selection. Particularly enjoy that each shot exhibits a narrative element and some convey the drama unique to helicopters.
