Nice photos, I’m off to Jacksonville area for the Airshow soon. What is actually based at Cecil field? Is it worth a trip?

Cheers Andy

A mighty fine base which has sadly fell by the way side, I was there in '97' when it was home to the East Coast F-18 and E-2 squadrons but even then a lot of the units were in the process of or had already left before closure in 1999. It was here that I was nearly arrested by the USN plod, as HMS Invincible had left Jacksonville/Mayport the day before with quite a few of it's crew missing, and being British they thought I was one.

GVLCN, the only things of note at Cecil nowadays are the US Customs P-3 AEW Orions, FLArNG CH-47, UH-60, UH-72 and C-12, USCG HITRON with MH-65's.
Both Boeing and Northrop Grumman have maintenance facilities including F-18 maintenance work. Military a/c from nearby NAS Jax, NAS Mayport and FL ANG from Jax Int use Cecil for practice landings, approaches etc etc..... however from memory it's a hard base to spot at from outside due it being surrounded by forest plantations on all sides.

Thank you thunder, that’s great info. Would you recommend any other nearby bases?

NAS Jasksonville (Jax), NAS Mayport and the FLANG at Jax Int, all worth looking into. Drop the PA's at the bases an email regards base visits, you never know.

Further to Thunder’s reply, Cecil is certainly worth a visit, though would advise discreton and haste with photography.
As well as the nice CBP P-3’s (which include the ‘Slicks’ without the radar dish), Omega 707 and DC-10’s often use Cecil as one of their East coast operating locations. While visiting again in August, the new Gulfstream 500 was based here for certification tests (“using the long runway”). Then, as well as the QF-16 mods being done here, some shots of the old Hornets were also possible (with great haste!), though as mentioned landing/take off and runway shots are not so easy.
Dieu et mon droit. In hoc signo vinces
