BrianA fighter jet made an emergency landing at RAF Lakenheath on Thursday in dramatic scenes that saw sparks shoot from its undercarriage.
Kurt Fairhurst was watching the planes at the US air base in Suffolk on Thursday morning when he saw the incident.
It is believed the F-15 fighter jet caught its arrestor wire with its hook, which caused the sparks as it landed on the runway.
Mr Fairhurst said: "It was rather impressive to see as I've never seen an aircraft take the emergency cable before.
"I was hoping for a safe landing.
"The aircraft then stopped on the runway and emergency vehicles rushed over the make sure the aircraft was safe.
"The emergency response was impressive to see.
"You could see it was a well practiced scenario as it was very fast and organised.
"Thankfuly the aircraft landed safely."
Master Sergeant Jason Harper, 48th Operations Support Squadron airfield manager, said this type of emergency is infrequent, happening "at most twice a year".
He said: "It was a standard hydraulic failure, resulting in the aircraft landing without brakes.
"In order for the aircraft to land safely, the pilot had to engage the barrier.
"To do this, the aircraft's tail-hook was in the down position and scraped along the runway surface generating sparks.
"The end result was a safe engagement and ultimately a safe arrival.
"Since this event was deemed an emergency, all First Responders are activated and on scene as a precautionary measure."
Yep. there is no need to dramatise a cable landing ,the base were kind enough to let us visit them and then someone stabs them in the back, what a C**T
Totally agree Dave, very well said!DaveChapman wrote:The one base that has the closest relationship with the enthusiast community in the UK and you sell pics of a non story to a rag like that.
Well done
