A very sorry Shack

Post by fmansam » Thu Jan 15, 2015 3:53 pm

I visited the Old Nicosia Airport today, which is under control of the UN.
We looked round the old RAF control tower, then the terminal, then Trident, i asked our Army guide if he knew where the old Shack was, he didn't, but he said "lets go look", this is what we found, poor thing.....the Airframe in question is XF700 / M, hope you like!!

Well, it's still extant at least! Shows just how strong those airframes were, though I suppose the conditions do help a bit.

Did you visit the terminal building? If so, how's that looking?

Thanks for posting :)

Re the Tridents .. We brought 2 of them back to the UK . Refurbed and joined the Trident 1/2 fleet . A T1E G-ASWU , known as ''Mr Wu'' , very nice to fly as had cranked throttles which you could actually reach and adjust whilst flying . Plus a standard T2E G-AVFB which was it's original reg B4 being sold off / leased to Cyprus . Think it's the one at Duxford . Whilst being ultra sound tested for damage and bullet holes , a bird's nest with eggs was found in the fin . Rumour had it that a manager had flown her back and did his usual ''thump'' thus breaking the eggs ; if he'd given the landing to the co- , the eggs might have hatched !

rgds condor .

Was your visit an official UN security / military visit. Or has the area become publicly accessible ?
Several years ago whilst on holiday visited Nicosia and the warning signs made it clear we were not welcome anywhere near the boarder / UN zone check points so never stopped to see if the old airport was visible. Have thing changed ? If your able to visit Paphos, do not forget there are two Shackleton AEW2 there. They should be visible from outside, made be even photographable, but best to ask permission first. Never know your luck.

Very detailed shots fmansam

Such a shame that there are a few "minor" issues which might delay her getting an airworthiness certificate from the CAA...... :ninja: :ninja:
- RAF Coltishall - Gone but never forgotten
- Norfolk. Nelson's County
