Sunny Monday At Marham 27.10.2014

Hi Everyone,
Took a trip to Marham on Monday as weather was so sunny to try to get some decent Tonka pics. First time I've spent the day there, and was very well rewarded, with Tornado action, and a few visitors, too (Even went back again for while on Tuesday, will post those separately). The visitor in pic 2 is technically not 'current military' i hope the Moderators allow it, as it would be a shame to leave it out.
And also had another very special visitor to end the day, in some cracking autumn sunset light too
On with the pictures.......

The Hunter must stay!!!!!
Super set Trev- far better than when i went up there last week, and was rewarded with a single approach by a Tucano!

Hi Guys
Thanks very much for all your kind comments, very much appreciated
Justin, dont knock Tucanos, I like them, nice and slow, my Panasonic copes with them better
Jammo... Knife76, Osprey was asking tower if they would like them to, or allow them more approaches to Marham, and the reply was 'we would love you to do more approaches'!! Knife 76 replied, 'great, see you soon then'
Patrick, yes it was a cracking day, will post some from Tuesday later.
Dan M, not sure about the burner question, I also noticed most only fired one on overshooting (usually the left) but is it fuel saving or just the Tonkas are so knackered they dont ignite?? Had an aborted take off on Tuesday because one burner didn't ignite properly and blew out, so he backtracked and had a second go.
Max, it was pure luck with the Tonka/Osprey picture, right place right time, Fang flight came back in fast and swept as Knife76 was on slow approach, they shot past, broke and each did a slowish 'beat up' of the osprey
All the best
Trev

Thanks Colin, and Skip. It was steady, rather than very busy, but as I was still off work I chanced it. And was an enjoyable day.I haven't been in the past because to have a days hol from work, go there and it's dead is a wasted day.

That is the trouble, when you have a day off to watch the aircraft you want action, which makes the American bases the first choice

Well done Trev, a lovely mixed lot.

Keep them coming.

Hello,
Dan M wrote:Nice set!
I've seen a number of Marham shots with the Tonka's doing failed approaches, and a lot of them seem to only max the one engine when they power off....is there any reason for this? Or are they just saving a bit of juice?
Cheers Dan

All the best Trev
the "one-afterburner-approach" is a training aid.
The pilot has to train to make a single-engine approach, just in case he lost one engine. Then the thrust from the engines isn't in the direction of flight anymore, the pilot has to compensate this angular thrust.
You will always see that the rudder is in the direction of the running engine with - like in your picture.
Now, you don't want to shut down a working engine and run on a single engine a heavy aircraft like a Tornado - can be dangerous in case of birds etc..
So you run one engine on nearly idle and put the other on reheat - and there you got your training.
I've also seen Typhoons doing it at RAF Coningsby in the past.
Ohh, and congratualtions to your day out - seems you had fun there and brought back some nice pictures.
Best regards Cujo
