I went to the 02 end (south side) of the Airbase again this afternoon, simply because of the brilliant weather, but also to see the progress on repairs to the Canadian CC-130H wing. The leading edge has been removed. My gratitude and appreciation to 'Dinger' for the following:-

As long as the bleed air duct and associated gubbins are not damaged, a leading edge replacement is straightforward enough if you have all of the parts. Give it a week if a replacement leading edge panel comes in, should be flying again for the 2nd week of the exercise, maybe sooner.

Before anything else, the sunny weather must get a mention. It plays a major part, not just in our enjoyment of matters aviation, but also as regards photography. Lighting, contrast, softer light early morning and late afternoon . . . !

It is enjoyable, but also very instructive, to watch the meticulous pre-flight preparation before engine start - in this case of a Finnish F-18. There is a thorough walk-around, more than once, where every square foot, from multiple angles, are looked at and assessed. It gives one a renewed respect for ground personnel, and the work they do.



Finnish F-18's. The time for noise and heat, lots of it! Heat haze from the midday sun, heat from afterburners - indeed heat from the reheat and that 'jelly' effect! Two General Electric turbofans, each pushing out almost 18,000lbf of thrust. HOT! And 'Kreivi von Rosen' (HN-457) has the best view.

Could you confirm your vantage point - is it where that lay-by is closed off (White Lane) and a walk up the access road to the fence?

Yes a small ladder is a must have, two-step minimum, through the fence is tricky. Simply join the others at the fence.

The last pictures of Week 1

A great time at the fence, mostly beautiful weather, and the pleasure and privilege of watching the movements of military aircraft. Where necessary faces have been pixelated to protect identities. As we know, much takes place before an aircraft takes to the air, the preparation is almost constant by the ground crews, the checks and double checks, the walk-arounds and inspections.
HN-434 had an issue with the port aileron which was eventually sorted.



HN-457 and its pilot. On this particular sortie the time lapse between pilot climbing into the cockpit and actual movement of the plane was around 45 minutes. The canopy was opened twice to allow some cooler air in, spare a thought for the aircraftsman who stood dutifully on the port side facing cockpit and pilot - reference a previous picture. Mid-afternoon with the mercury pushing the high 20's - ask me I was there.



Yes, the beautiful noise and the attraction of the afterburner . . .



Week 1 was great, the weather seems to be turning, week 2 we shall see. Happy weekend!

Just had the same thing happen to me. He said that the Finns don't want anything with Finnish insignia on it photographed (aircraft or personnel)!

Huh? Perhaps the RAF coppers (whomever) could be reminded to start sorting their own backyard. Yes right there inside the base nicely sat on the grass, with a zoom lens and other gear, taking close-ups of the cockpit. The plane is the Finnish CASA CC-3 seen on 9 Sept . .

Oh dear, green-eyed jealousy or what?! Serving personnel have rules regarding what they do with their photos far as I recall. Just be grateful for the freedom we do have in this country.

Waddington 02 end on a wet day.

Mind you, it never rained hard during my two hour (11:45-14:00) stay, drizzling at best but the brolly was needed! A few hardy souls braved the weather until the Finnish C295 (CC-3) landed, after which most left. You will see a misty rainy environment, very unlike the beautiful sunny weather of last week. For the record, pictures with personnel have been slightly blurred for obvious reasons.

A something different was seen when a AIM-9 Sidewinder missile (a dummy variant) was taken by trolley to the Rubb hangar, where just the nose tip from a F-18 could be seen.



The Finnish C295 came in high and landed deep into 02, taxiing all the way down to the WAVE end.



Check out that mist and drizzle shrouded environment, as the C295 taxis towards the Finnish dispersal area.



Some got off and some got on . . .

Cobra Warrior 2024-2 - done!
The very changeable weather is how I will remember it. We went from warm late-summer-sunny days, to a few wet and drizzly days, especially the period 17-23 September.

Two pictures tell the story. Both pictures show the Ilmavoimat (Finnish Air Force) in action. First a F-18 in full reheat from those twin GE afterburning turbofans, charging down a hot shimmering Runway 02, and surrounds. Second a Finnish C-295 workhorse in wet, grey and drizzly weather, taxiing to their dispersal area, having just arrived from Finland.
From T-shirt and sun hat to rainwear and a brolly. The joys and rewards of photography at the fenceline.
