Stroudy wrote: I cant quite make out in the rules section if AN-124's are allowed (as it was at a military base, and also presumably carrying military cargo) or not? Mod's please delete if not ok.

Thanks, Stroudy.
i'm sure the sister forum civilian Aviation would welcome it if the mods can't accept it (but i hope they will).

Superb pic and story

Don't know whether to laugh of cry; even in the 'attic' that is the cockpit the PAPI's would be telling this guy 'too low' and a conservative estimate.....800 metres to the touchdown markers. He should be D&A tested  Anyway, any landing that you walk away from, etc.

Disregarding what the cockpit instruments are telling the pilot, would somebody in Air Traffic Control, either visually from the Tower / Runway Caravan, or on approach radar not have warned the pilot of his low altitude ?

Can almost hear the scream of the engines from your photo. Great angle and shot.

Seen some other photos of this approach where it just clears the fence. Mental.

Great shot, must have been exciting. Well, it's always exciting to be near a landing An-124, but especially so with that one :)

I have just seen another one over on Flickr and there is somebody stood on the path immediately below the aircraft as the aircraft crosses the road - insanely it appears he has a small child (2 years old?) in his arms!! :O :O :O

The guy with the baby wasn't underneath the plane, he was under the left wing tip at least 25m out from the centre. The guy with the dog with his back to the fence is directly underneath the plane.

The guy holding the young child is at least 36 mtrs from the centreline, still you wouldn't catch me there with my children and that Behemoth coming down the approach.

Looking at the other pictures on that link, the 124 looks to be at the right altitude coming over the ILS localiser, but then for some reason sinks dramatically over the next 210mtrs to the point were he clears the fence by no more than 2 ft. There's no way he reached the runway threshold before touchdown which is another 205 mtrs further on from the fence, yet alone the normal touchdown area which is 450 mtrs from the fence.

 doesn't cover it, very lucky this didn't end with something more serious.

Accepted Thunder and Stroudy - looking at it more closely he is stood some way this side of centre line but all the same ................would not be stood there with my daughter! Would of made a run for it long before then (but there again would not have put myself in that position anyway)
