QF-4... The End at Tyndall AFB

Post by Jazz » Sun May 17, 2015 11:06 pm

Sad but inevitable news as the 82ndATRS QF-4 'Sundown' at Tyndall AFB approaches, was the final flights of two Rhino's on 12th May, with QRF-4C 68-0580 and QF-4E 72-1494/TD both shot down on their final missions over the Gulf of Mexico. Pictures from last October (with '494 later gaining a day-glo fin)...

Of the remaining Spooks, QF-4E's 71-0237 and 74-1631 are due to be shot down by the end of May, while three survivors escaping to Holloman AFB by mid-June should be QF-4E's 73-1167, 74-0643 and 74-1638, which should have another year or so flying there before the very end of US F-4 Ops. '237 sat on Death Row...

Finally, going back to the Phancon 2014 post and the very sad loss of a manned (pre-mod) 82ndATRS F-16C, flown by Col. Matt "Course" LaCourse on 6/11/14, this has since been identified as 85-1502/AC (still in former 119thFS/177thFW New Jersey ANG markings), which had been with the unit for less than three months after coming out of four years storage at AMARG...

With thanks to Frank "Pockets" at Tyndall for the latest QF-4 news :thumb:

Today, on the 57th anniversay of the first flight of the F-4 Phantom II, it is scheduled to be the end of QF-4 NULLO Ops at Tyndall AFB, with the killing of those final two QF-4E's (71-0237/TD and 74-1631/HD) here.
As well as those mentioned, a further shoot down at Tyndall, three weeks ago, was QRF-4C 68-0589 on 7th May. Seen at Phancon 2014 last October...

And so, the US Military will now be down to their very last operational F-4 base... Holloman AFB, New Mexico. Phantoms Phorever :thumb:

Cheers Paddy. As scheduled, both were shot down. Now just the three manned QF-4's to depart to Holloman.

Cheers guys. The type is only done at Tyndall, they will continue to operate from Holloman for a little while yet, apparently until 2017 now :thumb:

Update... including those last three from Tyndall, the remaining QF-4's at Holloman are said to total 26 aircraft, with 11 manned, 5 NULLO and 10 inactive.

News story on the final Tyndall QF-4 mission, with a nice shot...
