Canadairs in Majorca

Post by birdman » Fri Aug 02, 2013 11:00 pm

Due to a large forest fire on Majorca twenty nine additional aircraft were sent to the island to join the single Canadair CL215 based at Puerto Pollensa. Obviously not a good situation but it made for some entertaining flying. I just wished I had been on the beach when the group of six came in low over the town to scoop water. To give an idea of the height they came over the hotel is only eight stories high.

The local papers mentioned 29 aircraft plus four helicopters fighting the fire on the Monday but the types weren't mentioned. On Sunday 13 CL215's were mentioned.

Ah the memories I love Puerto Pollensa, haven't been for a few Years but the Canadair Flying Boats were just one of the Highlights of the Trips.

Used to watch them filling up in Algeciras Bay when I was based in Gibraltar many moons ago.

Always entertaining watching them thread their way through the shipping.....

Hi Birdman,

Great catch, despite the reason they were there... I was at Majorca end of June and saw one Cl215 on the small ramp at Port Pollensa- not read off because I was up on the hill behind the base...Was there on June 22. I was wondering if 43-22 was already there om temp.duty before the fire broke out.
Cheers,

Maurits

Great stuff Birdman . I'm a regular visitor to PP and the CL 215/415's are always great to watch. I wrote to the base commander a few years ago asking if a visit was possible & my son & I were given a personalised conducted tour of the base - they're very proud of their heritage. Thanks for your great post.

Thanks for all your comments folks.
I think 43.22 is the based aircraft although 43.17 was around a fair bit.
Have never thought of contacting the base, something for next year I think.
