Here is the arrival series of the P-8A 169554 LK-554 VP-26 Trident 92 from LIRN - NAS Sigonella with the AN/APS-154 AAS - Advanced Airborne Sensor attached -- you should rather call it radar... the part is the further development of the highly secret AN/APS-149 LSRS Littoral Surveillance Radar System that could multifunctionally track and classify various moving targets... and at sea and over land by a small number of P-3C Orions used was better known later as EP-3E! ... the AN/APS-149 had a double AESA radar which enabled almost 360° coverage, scanning, mapping, tracking and classifying targets at the same time---the AN-APS 154 AAS is based on this technology and also got an MTI - Moving Target Indicator installed that can track targets on the water and on the ground at the same time... but the part can do everything that the AN/APY-7 that was mounted under the E-8C J-STARS could do worlds better... I wonder why the Air Force never wanted this pod for themselves…. a KC-46 equipped with it…. would have been the ideal E-8C successor... this P-8A flew two Local Missions from Ramstein AB the last week and departed today back to NAS Sigonella ...
