Tiger Meet 2023 Gioia Del Colle (Very pic heavy)

A few people said they were surprised I wasn't going to the Tiger Meet and after seeing some of Ali's photos on here and seeing that the RyanAir basic ticket was 'only' £120 I decided to book a last minute trip to Gioia Del Colle for Tuesday afternoon and all day Wednesday home Thursday morning.

I stayed on a wine estate that was basically a B&B - no bar but they did sell a nice bottle of Tenuta Patruno Perniola 1821 Primitivo Riserva which they make on the farm and is apparently award winning and well thought of and has a complex taste but certainly won me over in the absence of any beer!

Any way GdC is a superb base for photography from the fence (in the afternoon) helped largely by the clear blue skies - I wish now I packed my heavy 200-500mm but to save space and weight I took my Nikon 70-300mm AFP plastic lens - not as good but easy to travel with.

I departed Stansted late at 7am and by the time I had got through Bari security and grabbed the car and driven the 45 minutes to a 'favourited' spot at the fence the afternoon launch was under way - the sun is properly behind you from about 1pm

These are just crops from the Tuesday/Wednesday afternoon launches - Landing shots are also possible but I have not had time to process them.

Fabulous! Nothing wrong with the "sameness" of angle of the shots -they are all great. Wish I could drive and I would have been tempted to have made the journey that you did! So boring here in the UK............................

Cracking set, and although there are many great colour schemes in there, my fave is definitely the more subtle German Tonka. It looks amazing in that light.

Excellent photos Mike, thanks for sharing them. Nice to see colourful schemes in the sunshine, unlike the grey paint under grey skies at Leeuwarden a couple of weeks ago.

I was planning on Frisian Flag - it's one of my favourite places ( Locals probably think I am mad ! Bit like saying I like Marham) . By the way I heard there isn't a Frisian Flag next year .

Question - do the civ/mil police take any interest in you when you are photographing at the fenceline at GDC? I've had some frustrating/scary experiences at some IAM bases

A) For departure shots I could stand well away from the fence.

B) for landing shots I went to the fence only when a plane was in sight and there were no vehicles on the inside of the fence -

I wouldn't recommend standing at the fence normally but during Tiger Meet there are local spectators and the police seemed reasonably tolerant - there was one particular Land Rover patrolling the inside of the fence that pulled up opposite me and the guys said the classic " No photos" so I kept an eye open for him and timed my move to the fence while there were no vehicles on the perimeter track.

I wasn't using a ladder which meant I had to shoot through the fence for aircraft on the ground - not ideal but better than nothing - I am just about to upload my runway shots to Flickr
