Post by slogen51 » Sat Apr 13, 2019 12:25 pm

some record shots from Saturday when another four SJ Strike Eagles manage to get away east bound (Tabor 95 ground abort and the original Tabor 91 stayed with it , Original Tabor 93 became Tabor 91 according to comms)

One from Friday - a really low departure from 06 by rage 42. Probably better on video or first hand

@Weazel69 - click on the image and the exif is under the Flickr image. They range from 1/1600 to 1/3200 having looked at some. If you are looking for advice on settings, as high as possible for jets and as slow as you can for prop/rotor to get blur.

Thanks very much for the comments

I like to set the F stop to suit my lens ( which seems to have a sweet spot between F8 and F11) in this case it can lead to a high shutter speed ( I prefer to do fighters at about 1000th). But the SJ departed in quick succession so there wasn't any time to make adjustments. I always use -ve compensation, especially with light grey jets ( not F-15Es!) which also pushes the speed up

thanks for the replies slogen51/nighthawke
I have been shooting Aviation pix since 1966 but it looks like have not been doing myself any favors with digital
I tend to use ISO 400 and shoot on Shutter priority mainly 500/650th sec until lately having upped to 1000th.So looking at those shots has me thinking its time to go back to school
Time for a review

Oops thought you were asking as a newcomer to photography. Wasn't trying to teach you to suck eggs :) It's whatever works best for you. Keep shooting :)

No probs.Nighthawke I think that after shooting Slides & Prints for 40yrs its hard to realise what you can do with digital thesedays as you were pretty limited to 50/100ASA in those days even though I did try a 200ASA once but that came out a bit grainy
some delights I have - polished metal - Lightnings including Saudi Belgian AF - C119 RDAF - RF84's to name a few
will I ever put them to FC - Who Knows Times Change

I'm sure plenty of others as well as me would love to see those - especially the Lightnings - in the W&R section.

I've noticed on my photos and those above that the SJ jets have an apparently unique three digit number on the rear fuse just under the starboard tailplane that isn't present on the LN jets. Does anyone have an explanation for this?

I know where u are coming from haha, 200 asa kodakrome was grainy as hell, l only ever used the 2/3 rolls I bought as a trial..... !
It's only in the last year or so l have realised that you can easily shoot newer dslrs in the 800 iso range and still get great sharpness and no noise, and am quite happy to shoot at 640 iso / 1/2000s speed.... something unheard of back in the day !!
