nellis open house

Post by raptor76 » Sat Sep 23, 2017 7:59 am

I'm looking into going to nellis open house in 2018, I'm after any tips and advice. I'm thinking of staying at circus circus and taking a taxi from there.

Is there any format of a map I can use?
is there a pedestrian entrance?
If so where is it?
What are the costs of food, drink and merchandise?

Any advice you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Raptor, at this years show people using public transportation can get a shuttle bus from the Main Gate (at the cross streets of Las Vegas Boulevard and Craig Road) to the Thunderbird Hangar entry point.
Only tips are make sure to wear a hat, use sunblock, drink plenty of water as dehydration can sneak up on you whilst you are in awe of the surrounds but above all ENJOY.
Hope you have a good one. :thumb:

As a frequent visitor to Vegas, might I suggest you look at anywhere other than Circus Circus?

Because of the name, it tends to attract more families than the other casinos.

If you are a family man traveling with children, than it's one thing

However, if you are a single guy that likes sleep once in awhile and doesn't like to have kids running all over the place, than Circus Circus is a bad choice!

I have stayed at the Stratosphere a lot lately. Decent rates and the additional resort fee (which isn't advertised usually with initial room quote) is lower there than others.

Cheers
John

Thank you for the info John. How much do you think a taxi ride would cost from stratosphere to the speedway?
How far is nellis from the strip?
If I stayed at the said hotel for 3-4 nights how much would the resort fee be?

Does anyone know if the participants are added to close to the event date? The list published at the moment isn't bad, but not as good as last year, I'm wondering if more stuff is announced just before show day?

Wonderful tool, the internet when you've got 7 minutes to spare...

taxifarefinder.com reckons it'll cost $59.09 and will take 26 mins
Google maps says it's 14.8 miles from the Stratosphere to the Speedway
lasvegasdirect.com figures that the tourist tax somewhere in the region of $30/room per night. There are variations and some lower-end establishments don't charge.

Attended the show about five years ago an absolute treat, where else can you be in shorts in mid November temps in the 70's
circus circus is just south of the the north end of the strip have you thought about accommodation nearer to the old part of Vegas which contains the public transport hub with links to nellies, i used it and saved a $64 cab ride.
just research Fremont Street and use that as a start.if you stick with Circus Circus, use the steak house there, best steak i've had on four visits to sin city.
I walked out of Nellis back to the village across the road from the main gate and the Thunderbirds sculpture, bus home from there.Just follow the locals walking back to the Officers Club and elsewhere, exit just to the left of the birds hangar.
The cab dropped me off at the speedway, then it was bus transfer to the base after a thorough bag search, if they are doing bus transfers from the main gate for foot pax then I would definitely go early and the public transport route. The cost saving will more than pay for the day times over.
Finally, if you stay at CC go to the observation deck at the top and look North gives you an idea how close Nellis is.
Good luck and enjoy, great day out, take plenty of water and factor 30.

Sounds like others have gotten in with some good info

I will add that I believe the daily resort fee at stratosphere is closer to $30 a day now. I have stayed at the 4 Queens on Fremont several times and they have decent rates and no resort fees. Others on Fremont have decent rates too but I noticed that they have started to charge resort fees as well.

If you stay in the southern part of the strip (closer to MGM, NY NY, Luxor, etc) then the resort fees are around $40 a day..... crazy money if you ask me...

Cheers!

Check out the link that Oz gave , most info is in there .

Food and Drink prices are fairly reasonable at the show and as the show is free entry anyway it makes it bearable .

The larger resort hotels will all charge a daily " resort fee " , no way around it , just their way of nickel and diming us and making you think you got the room for a bargain . There are plenty of Hotels to choose from , just depends on what amenities you are looking for . Plenty of good deals on line .

As for transport , anywhere on the strip has access to transportation , the " Deuce " Bus Service runs daily along the length of the strip , Fremont Street to Town Square is a little over hour depending on the traffic on the strip . This will take you past the West side of McCarron Airport for Signatures , Atlantic Aviation etc , where the Military Visitors usually park . From Fremont Street it is also easy to get a Bus down to Nellis AFB , Route 113 , I believe which takes about an hour .

Alternatively put the Uber App on your phone and use that , much cheaper than getting a taxi even with " surge pricing " , quicker than the bus and there are plenty of Uber drivers around .

Agree with pawlee regarding the heat and hydration , it will probably be very warm , you have been warned .

All in all a good show usually , enjoy .

I went last year.

Rented a car at McCarran Airport for 24 hours for $53 with Hertz. Free parking at the Vegas Speedway, just north of the base. Free transfer onto the base via USAF bus. Lots of USAF personnel directing traffic and telling you where to go. Really, really easy.

I stayed at La Quinta Nellis which is just west of the base and was a 5 minute drive to the parking. I couldn't be bothered with the hassle of Vegas traffic on the way to the show. If you get a top level room facing south you get the added bonus of seeing the preserved MiG-29 on the base in the distance.

Get there early, i.e. 9am. I was on the base within 10 minutes of parking. The bus goes right by the based HH-60's for photos / serial logging purposes.

Last year the ramp was open from the north end down to just south of the Thunderbirds hangar (look on Google Maps). Unfortunately all the based / visiting aircraft which aren't in the static are parked nose or tail on, so unidentifiable.

The show is excellent, and its pretty chilled out as long as you don't try to take nose on pictures of the F-22's. They were touchy about that last year.

Re staying on the strip - remember Vegas is party central, so if you have a pre-airshow hotel on the strip on friday / saturday night there a chance of being disturbed by other guests. I stay off strip these days having visited 7 or 8 times in the past.
