NATO Days 2019 Ostrava Mosnov,Czech Republic

Post by Van Bullitt » Sat Sep 28, 2019 10:10 pm

Hi guys,

It was about time I made it to NATO Days and the flight prices were good so I headed out alone on this trip, flying Wizzair BHX-KRK and Ryanair KTW-BHX.

Great to meet two of our German member friends Uli and Johannes. I see you guys made it to Lask for the DC F-16s.

It was a late evening flight out of BHX on Saturday night due to arrive Krakow at 0110hrs. With 2 hours sleep on the plane and a 30min delayed flight I picked up my hire car at 2am and started out on a night of W&R hunting on route to Ostrava Mosnov for NATO Days 2019.

On arrival at Krakow Balice I could see some M28s and Casa 295s on the ramp and having seen logs from Fri and Monday I didn’t need any of them so I am glad I didn’t waste time here.

Sunday 22/9/19
First stop was
Krakow town
1008 Ts-11 100bis(B)

Next I tried to see the Mi-8T 626 at the barracks close by but a row of trucks put paid to that.

I passed by Auschwitz around 3.30am through eerie patchy fog and close by preserved is:
Bobrek
(7449) An-2

I then headed to Dabie but didn’t realise the MiG-21 had gone since doing my research so I carried on to:
Strumien
(102) Il-18B

Over the border into the Czech Republic and still darkness in Ostrava
Ostrava – Libros
(8216) Mi-2

Ostrava – Hranecnik , Fire Station
(1523) Let-410FG fuselage
This is easy to see at present as the wall has been knocked down but with a lot of building work all around it the aircraft might not be around much longer.

Ostrava – Vitkovice
(0816) MiG-21U
Luckily dawn arrived here as I couldn’t find it in the dark despite being very close by!

Another MiG-21 went begging at Frydlant nad Ostravici as a local told me that MiG-21F-13 0107 has gone. I did have a look around anyway and it was nowhere to be seen.

After the best solo MiG-21 display I have ever seen I decided to call it a day as I was struggling to stay awake by 3.30pm. I would miss the Romanian IAR-330 display but the sun position was poor by now anyway. Two more W&R locations to see before my hotel just over the Polish border.

Monday 23/9/19
After a well needed 10 hour sleep I left the hotel at 0720 for:
Czerwionka Leszczyny
1923 Lim-2 Pres. In park on pole. Ex Pol AF

Myslowice

Sosnowiec Technical School
3306 Su-22M-4 Instructional. Ex Pol AF
The Fitter has moved further around the back of the school but can probably just be seen through the windows from the main entrance but if not, try the railway station platform behind. Luckily as this was a Monday permission was granted to photograph the aircraft.

Sosnowiec – ul. Jabionlowa
(6001) Mi-2Ch Pres. On pole. Ex Pol AF

Dabrowa Gornicza – HK Curiton Company
1811 MiG-21M Pres. Ex Pol AF.

Czestochowa – Centrum Szkolenia Strazy (Fire training school)

1224 Ts-11 Instructional. Ex Pol AF
1603 An-26 Instructional. Ex Pol AF

? An-2 Instructional. Ex Pol AF?
All are behind a wall (And a bus!) but can be seen through gaps in the wall at N 50.78980, E 19.09882

Czestochowa – Rudniki airfield

Lipicze

This is slowly disappearing into the undergrowth with the company shut down and nobody attending to it.

Malutkie
5340 Mi-2R Pres. Ex Pol AF.

Nowa Brzeznica

Napoleon – Muzeum 303

1907 MiG-21M Pres. Ex Pol AF.
456 MiG-23MF Pres. Ex Pol AF.
2029 Mi-2RM Pres. Ex Pol AF.
36/10-RB Mirage IIIC Pres. Ex Adla
W1760 Ts-11bisD Pres. Ex Indian AF
(9855) An-2 Pres. Ex Pol AF.

I was expecting a junkyard with this place being so far out in the sticks but it is a superb, well kept museum dedicated to RAF Polish 303 Sqn(I need to watch the film) and apart from well preserved aircraft has some great dioramas and models on display. I wish I had more time to spend here. Such a strange place to put the place. The owner must have plenty of money with an Aston Martin in the car park and is probably not too bothered about numbers of visitors which is a shame as not many people will see what they have done! I was the only visitor there and had to search for someone to pay as there was no discernible reception.

Bytom Barracks
9784 MiG-21bis Pres. Ex Pol AF.

Before heading to drop my hire car off I went to search for the MiG-21 at Mierzecice but 4G reception deserted me when I tried to check out Eurodemobbed for the satellite view and I couldn’t find it. I was running short of time and 4G returned after I had dropped the car off annoyingly and I realised I was only about 50 yards away from it. Oh well one to save for next time.

Katowice – Pyrzowice airport
(6813) MiG-21MF Stored. Ex Pol AF.
(1402) An-26 Stored. Ex Pol AF.
(1407) An-26 Stored. Ex Pol AF.
(1604) An-26 Stored. Ex Pol AF.
All can be seen from the far corner of the rental return car park.

Another fun day W&R hunting in Poland over, it was time to head home. Not many places left to see in Poland now.

And barring any surprises that was my last planned trip for 2019.

Cheers
Paul

Hi Paul,
We went to Dabie after the show at Ostrava on the Sunday, and the Mig 21
was still there on its mound in front of the building,it could be seen through
Fancy wrought iron gates.
Hope this helps future spotters.Neil.
