If you want to fly, only options are Amsterdam or Eelde (Groningen, but don't know if any airlines are flying from the UK to Eelde)
From Amsterdam you can take the train to Leeuwarden or rent a car, plenty of hotels in Leeuwarden although a lot of rooms will be booked for airshow crews.
At the airshow days there is a busferry from the trainstation to the airbase

London-Southend -> Eelde airport, daily connection, the flights are offered by Stobart Air :) Information about Eelde airport (EHGG) can be found here: http://www.groningenairport.nl/en/home

If Eelde airport won't be suitable, you could indeed always try Amsterdam-Schiphol, plenty of connections with the UK there.

Schiphol Leeuwarden via the A7 motorway is a nice scenic drive. Halfway the afsluitdijk (big dam) is Breezanddijk. One group of the Dambusters used that as a navigation point. One of the upkeep bouncing bombs is still out there somewhere.

I went in the mid 90s, a spotters charter flight in a Dornier and allowed to land/depart from the base, I forget whether we flew from Stansted or Luton, good trip though.

They've only got two at Leeuwarden. So, if both were flying.........

F-002 was on static with the RNLAF Apache and Do228 till it was moved to the HAS site to prep for role demo. Agreed show was down in numbers but what was there was good quality.

And not quite sure how many F-16s the Netherlands still operate but its nowhere near the old fleet size. I think a turnout of 11 F-16s on flying role demo and 8 on static was a decent turn out!

On the subject of F-16, they had to clean-out Volkel & Leeuwarden to supply the number of a/c they did!
Two JSF-35 flying + one on static (a plastic decoy) that allegedly worked very nicely on Friday when having paint thrown over it by a 'Peace Sea-hag' who couldn't spot the difference....FAIL!! :grr:

On Sunday, both F-001 and F-002 were on static following the completion of the role demo.
