29th June 2013 Wittmundhaven
Re: 29th June 2013 Wittmundhaven
On my recent trip to Wittmund I flew to Hamburg, hired a car and drove. I stayed in Wilhelmshaven which is about 2 and a half hours away from Hamburg. Wittmund is about a 30 min drive from there
Wilhelmshaven is a great town, has a massive naval base and museum. Plenty of hotels and bars

If you have some spare cash I highly recommend the Columbia Hotel - nice spar, and right next to the Pumpworks which has a good bar and "beer market" on certain days, with live band entertainment

This should be the Naval Museum (note the Starfighter outside)

Hi Massimo
Here's a link to the area:
http://goo.gl/maps/OWG5b
A = an old entrance to the Naval base, which is now closed off. There is only the main one there now. You cannot see into the base and all ships are well concealed. I was lucky enough to get on the base as I'm writing a magazine article
B= The museum. Excellent value for money with access to a U-Boat, Destroyer and Mine Sweeper. There's also a harbour tour for an additional fee. http://www.marinemuseum.de/ (The Starfighter is in a bad way and not very photographic due to the building, it is no longer placed where it is in this image)
C= The Columbia Hotel, which is complete unlike in this old sat image
Cheers

Re: 29th June 2013 Wittmundhaven
In regard to the Spottersday, the confrimation I received from Wittmund din't mention anything about entry prices and to the best of my knowledge it is free entry if you are one of the registered spotters.
I have no idea for the open day but I think it's free entry once again althogh you may have to pay for parking or using the shuttle busses. You may want to check http://www.phantom-pharewell.de
Cheers

Re: 29th June 2013 Wittmundhaven
The information says you have to pay the shuttle bus driver on the spotter's day, but it doesn't say how much!
Hi Andy, obviously you will be at Wittmund, pm me, and we'll meet up!
Cheers, Stig.

Think they have changed the parking arrangements to close to the airfield similar type of thing to what they did last year.......
