Airpower 2013, Zeltweg

Post by Wes_Howes » Thu Aug 09, 2012 8:17 am

I notice the dates for the show have been confirmed as June 28th and 29th 2013.

I was wondering if anybody on here has been before and has any advice on where to stay, etc. as I love to go if I can.

Cheers

Wes

Been 3 or 4 times. Always stayed away from the base in either Graz or Linz - both have ibis/etap style cheapish french style hotels. If you want to stay in the Zeltweg area, book up very soon.

Plan to get there early, the earlyer the beter. It gets absolutley rammed with people. It was so full last time that it was difficult to walk around inside and see everything.

Thanks for the quick response Malcolm. I was looking at staying in Graz and getting a hire car, the only problem I'm having is finding where to fly to Graz from, in the UK

I think Ryanair from Stansted is/was the only way into Graz, but the schedule was poor - every fifth sunday during a leap year or some such. However, if you're going to hire a car, you can fly to anywhere. In the past we have flown into Bratislava and Salzburg - both have several flights a day from major UK airports. There are good museums at Graz, Bad Ischel and Salzburg so plenty to do in addition to the show. Munich isn't that far away either. Last time we flew Bristol-Basle on the Friday, did Zeltweg Saturday, and Luxeuil Sunday, and then back home Sunday night.

Thanks again Malcolm, your advice is much appreciated. I was thinking of flying out Thursday and coming back Sunday, will look into flights at the airports you suggested :)

Ryanair to Graz, fly Wednesday, coming home the Sunday is what I've done at several time's previously although these flights wont show on Ryanairs site for a while yet.

Also, if you want to cut out the hassle of traffic there are many camp sites available, as close as 2 minutes walk from the end of the runway, with on site bars and bbq's too....

Ah, thanks Kevin, I did wonder why it showed me Ryanscare flew there but no flights were showing. Camping close by does sound a good idea but my tent isn't exactly compact and the comfort of a hotel is far more appealing ;)

Used the camp site myself last year. Bought a small fold up type tent for the event and it worked fine, although did sleep in the car one night due to cold. Camp site was excellent idea as it provided free car parking for the three days of my stay and was easy walking distance from the show and right next to supermarket and a resturant. Traffic was grid locked for miles and the number of people on Saturday huge. I walked to the end of the runway on the Saturday and got excellent shots from outside. Planning to visit again but F-4 event at Wittmund is the same weekend.

I went two years ago and flew our from Stansted to Klagenfurt on the Thursday, stayed in Graz and then flew back from Graz on the Sunday. That worked really well. Absolutely rammed in the show on the Saturday, we got therse early and had a good place at the front, everyone was climbing all over us and our stuff in the afternoon. Spent Saturday outside at the end of the runway... very much more civilised.
