The Milviz CH47 is by far the best handling, best sounding (externally spot/tower/flyby) FSX helo i have ever flown... by a wide margin. Even surpasses now my favourite, the MH53M.
Doing Pinnacles is unbelievable and realistic with the superb handling. Fine control movements are super. Holding a 25-30° nose up pinnacle was a joy especially coming in as they do in real life and settle down with brakes on...
You can even decide how far the ramp goes down so if you do decide to do a pinnacle, you can higher/lower the ramp to suit how steep the hill is.

Thanks to Matt and Oli for the flight tonight in the Pave Lows... i have some screen shots but will do them tomorrow.

Just a quick question gents, how do you guys take screenshots? I'm still using the old, Ctrl+PrtSc and paste to Paint, method but I'm thinking there must be an easier/simpler way of doing it, especially if one is flying online :S

RichC and Olicat, many thanks for the flying last night, really enjoyed it :) Looking forward to the next one!

Im either getting my screen shots by pressing the default 'V' screen shot key in FSX, or I use Fraps (Can also record video).

I just press "V" to get mine. They are then automatically stored in C:Documents/Pictures/Flight Simulator X Files as BMP's and so you need to use Photoshop or whichever to edit/save to JPEG.

Some from our Chinook flight
Image

Image

As Rich said, pinnacles are effortless... I held mine for at least 2 minutes and only needing to make slight rudder (only it isn't called that in helicopters I don't think) corrections
Image

Even had time to take a quick snap out of the window
Image

Came low level back around to Netheravon via Upavon and some confined areas
Image

RichC showing off
Image

MH-53 shots coming soon...

EDIT: Here they are!
Image

Image

Inserting a fire team into a building to go and deal with some terrorists
Image

Image

Now going low level after a MERT extraction
Image

and settling down, medical teams came and picked up the wounded
Image

Intel came through that the new leader of Al-Quaeda was having a picnic in a local sports field and that he must be stopped
We swooped down on him blowing his Croissants away with the downwash. (On a side note, where are all these terrorists coming from? )
Image

We dragged him, kicking and screaming over to a local airstrip where the CIA were waiting

Wicked stuff!
The Chinook is really good for the airshow practice... as you saw.
As for the Pave Low mission, you didn't mention poor LowLevelRAF ingesting your flares during the low level sortie. They went right into his intakes.
Hope the Washing Machine extraction failure was cleared up and not a sign in site of it taking place!

The puddle of water has departed the area and the jeans were successfully extracted and taken to base to dry out... thanks for providing cover but luckily there were no insurgents to be seen (or skid marks) hahaha

Seriously, it was great fun and we had a laugh while doing it... I'd be happy to do it again after Im back from France

I must admit I took the Milviz chinook out for a spin, and its very nice :D! I feel a Bravo November repaint coming on :thumb: Both of you thanks again for a good flight, had a good laugh :) Olicat, glad your skid marks, I mean hostile jeans were taken care of aha :') The flares luckily didnt cause too much damage, however the MH-53 I was in, will need a new set of front engine blades :'(

Ready for the next one!

I've been messing with flares, i had them coming out about 8 in one go with some little ones spurting out the side, however i've changed a bit too much and i now have the usual error message coming up when editing effect files.
We seriously need someone proficient in making flares for the helos.... with smoke like the ones i sent. But coming out around 30ft from the fuselage (tried that today but its not within limits of the effect and thus error). It works in FXEditor but not in FSX.

Been playing with the brownout effect...

This is the original:-
Image

Image

and i have now made it (for the Chinook only) so its more realistic, as you come into the approach to land, its below and behind until you get to 50ft and around 10-20kts where it starts to overtake the chinook due to the downwash shifting forward from the front rotors as it flares. Down to around 10kts and most of the brownout, like for real, shifts forward as the main "wind" is ahead of the cockpit due to the flare.
This works with the Landing Lights (CTRL L) and works in conjunction with the original effect (fixed/automatic) so you don't get the whole effect when ground running and around 50% on the ground, its just the default which works well.

Near total brownout from the cockpit limiting visibility to around 95% most of the time instead of the default 50%

Image

Coming into land and just flaring, the dust is about to catch up and shift forward with the downwash
Image

Downwash now forward of the Chinook and so is the brownout
Image

Totally shrouding the Chinook with 75% of the brownout now forward of the aircraft due to the flare/forward rotors providing majority of downwash ahead of the cockpit
Image

Total brownout
Image

Go to 50% (just before lift off) or idle and press CTRL L again to shoo away the dust into default (as in the first pic) and back to normal.

Fantastic mod Rich. See a lot of effects said to mimic real life and they fail miserably. You have seen it for real, and more importantly, understand the way it behaves. Well done fella. Looks great in pics, but bet its "blindin'" in video.

Thanks, Gary. It involves 18 different locations for the original dust effect to get to this. I might add a few more for side effect yet but as it is now it's damn effective when flying. Good thing is, i tried it earlier with a visual reference point close in to the pilot's side like they do in real life (sometimes having some poor sod kneeling down back to the chinook) and it works well. You lose total visual references apart from that close up within 10ft or so.
Done some flares for the chinook too but as my simconnect is broke, i can't develop my own with SDK so editing the existing flares has major limitations. However i was adding smoke to each flare, some popping out in twos and also the angel wing effect (sort of) minus the downward facing launcher and i pressed "save" on the original instead of the edited version and it won't work as i did something wrong so that's that mod out the window until i can sort it again (took 3hrs).

Regards the brownout effect, noted you have "tied" it to the landing light keys. Seem to remember that there is a "trigger" utility that, when certain parameters are met that you can define, things like your effect can come in to play. Im at work at the mo, but when i can ill find details for you.
If its workable, could be interesting.
Could make the effect only happen when aircraft are in a certain regime of flight, landing phase - and reversed for take off.
Think you can specify a hell of a lot, its similar, or same to what justflight etc use for inflight refuelling. Its a trigger.

Does not have to be for fuelling. . . . .

I can't use FSX SDK because my simconnect is broken and the only way of repairing it is to re-install windows and im not doing that just for FSX.
So cannot use SDK, FSUIPC and FSInn etc.

Nice, if only someone could take the probe off and the radar off the side it would look more like the HC3/5

Hmm, i deleted the probe and radar in Gmax, saved it as MDL and everything works fine apart from the rotors do not turn in FSX. However in cockpit view, the rotors turn fine. Just external views the rotors are not turning. That's that then, i have no experience in Gmax so no idea why.

Would be nice to have a good Mk3 model. UKMIL have a Dutch example which looks like the Mk3
