what made them suspicious?

Our sister site CA suffered at the same time. There was a influx of email addresses from Russia including

@ro.ru
@bk.ru

In a single day there were 60+ registrations all with suspicious email address.

When you are checking each individual registration it can be time consuming. I’ve blocked certain domain names now

they were just trying to be friendly :-D

Silly thought, but are you running the StopForumSpam extension? It keeps a lot of strange registrations off my board.

Just tried to join the CA forum, is that one still not taking new members?

Possibly not - the late Mike Branford was co-Admin. Following his recent passing, Andy (user-andygolfer) posted this as part of a post. I hope he won't mind me quoting it here:

"...I will be doing what admin i can but Mike was far more knowledgeable than me so there may be instances where things don't run smoothly for a while. To lessen my load I've turned off new registrations for now..."

Maybe a pm on this forum to Andy may be appropriate.

I've been very busy with basic CA stuff and lots of other aviation duties , my Branch Chairman for Air Britain Stansted as it's AGM season, screening for ABPic where one of the main screeners is away for a fortnight (we have about 300 pics in the screening queue as the moment and I've screened about 70 today myself). I've also been helping the daughter of a friend of ours (me & SWMBO) who's mother died 10 days ago and lots of other things (It's been a Rubber dog muck time all round) so haven't yet turned it back on , (I've got to remember how now but I think Mike did a post in our mods section ages ago so it should be easy).

I'll turn it on for 24 hours but if it gets inundated with spammers then it will have to go off again to keep me sane. It was getting silly for a while before Mike passed and he turned it off temporarily a couple of times.

I'd like to say normal service will resume soon but I'm not holding my breath. apologies for thre inconvenience

I turned it off again yesterday as in the previous 48 hours I had a surge in applications from slammers which take ages to check through and ban. Something I currently don't have time to do sorry
