It’s time to start a 2024 Newark Air Museum News thread, through which I will endeavour to keep people advised of the day to day activities at NAM.

Again on behalf of everyone at Newark Air Museum I would just like to say a BIG THANK YOU to everyone who visited in 2023 and supported the museum throughout what's been a challenging year.

Strange to see the following comment from the 'drone-pilot' - "It was closed to the public that day, so stopped outside the fence".

You can clearly see cars in the visitor and volunteer car parking areas; the Vulcan scaffolding being installed; all of the buildings access doors are open and there are visitors walking around on site.

Here's hoping that our neighbours and landlords don't see the footage! The take off point, whilst on the road side is actually on private land; the property boundaries on the western side of Drove Lane go right up to the roadside and the landowners are responsible for the verge maintenance - as noted in our Title Deeds for the Southfield Site!

I am so tempted to ask what would the neighbours and landlords would have said about a car parked by the side of the road, and adjacent to a closed entrance to a field. But I will not.

I will also not mention the term "applied right of access" especially as there are no signs". But again I will not :-)

I have never been called a Karen before but there's something new every day.

Our access to the Southfield Site that we own (on the right hand side of the Google Street view) was instigated with full planning permission to highway standards, culverting the dry dyke to highway standards at a cost of around £20k back in the late 1990s. The neighbour subsequently put in their access (left hand side on Google Street View) without any planning permission and filled in the dry dyke.

Over the years I have represented the museum on several planning disputes with the said landowner, one of which went to the Planning Inspector. Whilst planning was eventually granted 28 conditions were applied; none of which have ever been discharged, but they still use the access.

Several years ago we had a radio controlled plane display at a museum event, which subsequently went down on their land and the proverbial hit the fan - we no longer allow such flights off our land, likewise this influenced the policy of no drones’ being flown off our site/land.

In recent years the wider situation has become even more complicated with regards to the landowner, who has started to develop land to the west of our site around the A1/A46/A17 junction. Shortly before I replied to your original post yesterday afternoon I had become aware of a major announcement that was pending from our landlord, (we lease the Northfield Site – Vulcan and Hangar 1 location from the Agricultural Society). Hence why I was perhaps slightly sensitive when I posted my reply.

This land sale is being made to the previously mentioned landowner/developer and will stop us ever having the opportunity of landing any more aircraft at ex RAF Winthorpe in the future. The western runway threshold in the red marked area on the above weblink is the touchdown point from the Vulcan delivery back in 1983.

One final thought from me. Posts in the public domain do have consequences. Back in 2006, posts on the former version of Fighter Control nearly lost us the Viggen delivery into RAF Cranwell. When I eventually agreed to sign up on here to represent the museum, I was given moderation rights on this section of the forum; I have never chosen to use them to moderate posts; but these places are used by many people to gather information.

I am always mindful not to present opportunities to make the museum’s ongoing operations even more difficult than they already are. Rest assured I have tried to chose my words very carefully here tonight.
