Thursday the 11t, June, 2015.

I arrived at Wiley Syke at noon after receiving info that there might be trials on at Spadeadam today. Freq used Spade ICF and 315.475 for Vagaabonds.

13.30 Vagabond 19 & Vagabond 20 flew (Wildcats) flew in from the north east and commenced individual flare trials + dispensing chaff.

each helicopter dispensed 64 flares starting with 4 increasing to 8 and then twelve all the action was within 400 yards of the Wiley Syke compound

at various heights, Smokey Sams were fired from R8 at least a dozen. The Vagabonds were on the range for 40 minutes before departing to the north east.

At 15.00 a Falcon 20 arrived for Ew and requested action with Sky Guard.

In the morning an U/I jet probably a GR 4 was heard but not seen calling up Blackdog.

The weather was fantastic sky was gin clear with temp of 75 f. lots of raptors I even heard a cuckoo. in the morning what looked like a buzzard was soaring over Berry Hill and then it dived on some prey and disappeared.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MDET2vYcTxQ

Hi,

Does anyone have any idea why spadeadam (D510) is activated until midnight tonight and 3am for the rest of the week.Very unusual.
I know they have night flying certain times of the year but certainly not till 3am for fast jets.
Is it connnected to the deployment currently at West Freugh??

Any help.

Thanks

Hi Poison 1, It does seem strange I have no knowledge of the West Freugh Deployment. D510 & D 510 A are both deactivated all this week 11th through to 15th bet 09 00. BST to 17.00BST there are separated Notams for various days Spadeadam activated for just an hour 19.00 to 20.00 and later through to 3.0am.

There is a Notam H3897/15 for today of a Close Air Support Exercise at Bassington vCY Alnwick today from 10 00am to Noon. This is for Exercise Triplex Warrior.

Another Triplex Warrior Notam H 3896/15 again for Today of up to 40 Aircraft involved flying in The Northumberland National park W Bet 9am & 13.00pmI 40 miles of 55200N

between 17.00BST to 18.30BST Jackpot Control 241.950.or 131.175. Possibly Warcop?

Spadeadam is open today from 14:30 until 23:00 . A Danish Herc from Lossiemouth was due on the range this afternoon but I never saw it and there was some Tornado activity too but all above the low cloud base .
I believe that the activity is all part of Exercise Cobra Warrior which is taking place over the north east over the next two weeks .
There is also some activity at Carlisle Airport tonight involving night flying .

Hi folks,

Anymore info on what was happening last night.

Approx 2230 last night I could hear at least 1 chinook for a good half an hour or so coming and going and I live quite a distance from the airport.

Would be interested to know what was going on.

Thanks

Morning all,

Ex Cobra Warrior arrived at Carlisle airport last night. The action started around 20:00L with DA42 'Gaurdian' GFFMV doing loops over Spadeadam at 8,000ft. 4 FRA FA20s were also up over the North Sea and Scottish Borders. Vader 1 GFFRA, Vader 3 GFRAO, Vader 4 GFRAL & Vader 5 GFRAS. On arrival at the airport around 21:00 I was surprised to see so many cars and people for was something which very few people knew about.

About 21:30 'Zorro71' called up on a 7 mile final for runway 25 ( the long runway for those who don't know). IR lighting was on the runway and he landed using NV. Very impressive landing if i don't say. About 10 mins later C17 'RRR821' called on final for 25. Runway lights on he landed and had stopped by the Delta taxiway. Again another breathtaking landing. He taxied to the end of runway 25 before turning and parking on the active. Another few minutes passed with multiple noise of fast jets coming from Spadeadam.' Lifter,' a single Chinook then landed (24 POB) and hovered to the 19 runway where the Herc was parked. He took on fuel from the C130. Then approx 5 mins later, 'Knife 63 and 64' CV22s called final for 25. Again all in total darkness other then a green nav light. This was the first time I had seen them flying, so even though it was pitch black, was quite a treat.

The Knife formation taxied onto the disused runway and took on fuel from what I believe was the airports own fuelers. This appeared to be an engine running, rotors stopped refuel.
The C17 then taxied down 25 and carried out his power checks. About 23:00 he departed with what I can only describe as a performance take off. The climb out was impressive and at around 2,500 ft switched to Swanwick Mil. Lifter then departed from the 19 numbers routing low level, lights off, in the direction of Spade. Around 23:15 Zorro71 C130 asked for start and taxied and departed from 25.

We then decided to see if we could get a better view of the CV22s by moving to the crash gates by the 19 threshold. However no floodlights were being used and we could only see flashing lights in the distance.
We left the airport at about 23:35.

From what I've heard, those who ventured into Spadeadam last night were not disappointed.

A great night was had by all who made it.

Thanks to all the aircrews for a great display and a BIG thanks to my contacts, you know who you are.

Geoff
