Blue circle.
Blue circle.
In my home village of Denver, Norfolk, a stone's throw from my abode, is this plaque on a fine old dwelling. It remembers Captain George Manby, who invented the Manby Mortar and modern fire extinguisher.
My question is, what blue circle or commemeration plaque do you have in your local hamlet?
Cheers Sid.

Re: Blue circle.
I've got Neville Duke's opposite my house.
In this world there's two kinds of people, my friend. Those with loaded guns, and those who dig. You dig.
Re: Blue circle.
Nice to have an aviation related one near to you. A couple of miles from me in Downham Market there was one for Lord Horatio Nelson, who lived in the town in his younger years, but on going to snap it last week I found it missing. I hope it's just for renovations and not been removed for some ridiculous political correctness reason.

Re: Blue circle.
There’s a Manby plaque in Gorleston as well.
I don’t have a photo but I have the listing
George William Manby: Residence of. High Road, Gorleston. Inventor of the life-saving rocket etc. No unveiling ceremony. Erected 2012. Sponsored by House owners
Even more importantly
A Toby Carvery in Great Yarmouth bears the name 'Captain Manby'.
That’s actually in Gorleston as well, damn those wiki people.
We also have a Manby Road in both Great Yarmouth and Gorleston, my uncle lived on the Gorleston one. On the Yarmouth one, same house number lived a man with the same name. He was the local schools motorcycle instructor if you remember the scheme during the late 70’s. They were both called Frank Lewis !
We also had a William Adams, another famous lifesaver, the Witherspoons is named after him :-)

Quite a character.

That's interesting. In my early years I lived in two different houses in Manby Close in the village of Hilgay, a couple of miles from where I live now. Captain Manby is buried in Hilgay churchyard, I recall being taken to his grave from primary school in the late 60s to be told about his life and inventions. I've been back a couple of times recently but haven't managed to find it again.gyvespa wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 6:09 pmThere’s a Manby plaque in Gorleston as well.

Always one for a challenge, I found this after a Google search:

There is a hyperlink at the very top to some photos, which should help in locating it.

That's brilliant Nighthawke, thank you. It hadn't dawned on me I could find the location with an internet search. I visit the newer part of the graveyard often as my Father is laid to rest there, so next time I'll revisit the older cemetery and see if I can locate it.Nighthawke wrote: ↑Tue May 25, 2021 10:26 pmAlways one for a challenge, I found this after a Google search:

Re: Blue circle.
No problem, just glad to help. It is surprising what you can find on the web. I have found grave records before when doing family research. Not all churches have them but sometimes you can get lucky and they can he very useful.
