Landscapes, Portraits, Sports, anything really as long as it is within the guidelines and not offensive. Please do not post images of civilian aircraft here. We would be grateful for those on our sister site - Civilian Aviation.

Transit of Mercury 11/11/19

Post by zero_gravity » Tue Nov 12, 2019 8:07 am

Image

Two images of the transit a few minutes apart taken under extremely cloudy conditions here in NW UK
There were four cloud layers at differing levels all of which conspired to hide transit from view.

Impossible to use a telescope so opted for DSLR with 300mm lens.
According to a NASA spokesperson magnification of at least 50x would be needed to see anything , in perfect conditions
Obviously the 300mm lens provides far less than this , however out of about 30 frames , exposed over ten minutes
a couple provided a a glimpse of the event.

Hopefully others will have been far more successful

Heading should of course read "Mercury" not Saturn....I blame the medication

Sorry to say but I’m confident this is not Saturn but is actually Mercury. The transit of Mercury happened yesterday and I would be very concerned if Saturn was between us and the Sun!

Quite right Paul.....no idea what happened there but I have of course amended it.
Sorry about that , having spent all that time straining to see the thing you would think it would be engrained on my brain!

Very good that you captured it any way. I wasn’t in a position to photograph the transit myself but I did use binoculars (x10) to see it. Just as well the sun is sun-spot free at present to be able to pick it out easily!
Maybe will get a chance in 2032!
