My Wildlife Year Quarter 3

Post by Ross Forsyth » Thu Oct 03, 2024 11:53 am

Time for the next instalment of my wildlife year from North of the Border.
Images from mainly around my home patch here in Edinburgh with a couple of ventures further north for some season specialities :D

1/The local dog Fox has been great all summer and its been amazing watching him turn from looking like a skinny scraggy looking thing in his summer fur to now growing into his winter coat and looking more foxy everyday!
Image

2/Always on edge due to dogs and dog walkers which bound through the woodlands
Image

3/Nice view from here
Image

4/July means it`s a trip north for the seasonal highlight for me for the last 15+ years...Ospreys and a new location at a friends recently opened Osprey hide near Huntly...some great results particularly with this young bird making several what appear practive dives throughout the day
Image

5/The best part being we managed to capture it from so many different directions giving great variety
Image

6/Before a head on for its final dive and making off with a fish
Image

7/The pond also has a few other species hanging around firstly a group of Red Deer Stags including this lad who has managed to get his antlers tangled with hay baling twine by look of things, probably while trying to scratch of the velvet from his antlers
Image

8/Swallows and Housemartins provide a great subject to hone in your tracking and panning skills while waiting for Ospreys to appear
Image

9/Swallow in for the kill
Image

10/And plenty Housemartins
Image

11/Badgers.....Always great to see especially in daylight and i`ve been very lucky the last couple of months
Image

12/
Image

13/Be interesting to see how their behaviour is now Autumn has arrived and wether early appearances before dark continue!
Image

14/Another trip away from Edinburgh saw me on a boat cruising up and down Loch Shiel on the West Coast to see and photograph White Tailed Sea Eagles, the weather couldn`t have been any better!
Image

15/3 pairs of birds were seen on the trip including this bird landing near that years nest which the young had already fledged from earlier in the summer
Image

16/You can`t post WTSE shots without the standard about to grab something image can you?
Image

17/Visits to the local river have been curtailed a little as its not a great time with vegetation so think but still managed a visit to get this Kingfisher early 1 morning
Image

18/An evening out in Perth next on the lookout for some Beaver lol ... managed to find them but sadly just as the light was failing but managed to capture this 1 shot
Image

19/A great couple of months for some of the UK owls around where I live,2 sets of Long Eared Owls kept men busy for a couple of evenings
Image

20/A young Owlet using its tracking system on a fly early 1 morning
Image

21/Head on hunting adult bird
Image

22/Another young bird hiding in the trees with the leaves saving the backlit image
Image

23/Short Eared Owls were also present at the same location but not as close to where we would stand
Image

24/At last a Tawny Owl which has been hiding near where I see my fox and badgers made the mistake of flying from 1 tree to the other and being seen....quickly changed lens and captured a couple of frames
Image

25/Mousey making an appearance beside the Badger sett, and providing a good food source for the Tawny Owl
Image

26/And to finish the Quarter a visit to Dunbar to photograph a lost bird.....Steppe Grey Shrike which appeared with the birds being native to central asia and northern China...such a great bird to photograph
Image

27/Making short work of the local Wasp population before moving on a week or so ago
Image

As Always thanks for taking the time to have a look

Cheers
Ross

Stunning set of images. What a lucky fellow you are to be able to see such wildlife at(relatively) close quarters.

Absolutely incredibly beautiful. I find myself lingering on each image, truly wonderful. Thank you for sharing your work - for a few moments, all problems and trials of normal human life are forgotten, as we absorb the subject, the composition, the colours, the little snapshots of the real world, that are captivating.

If you can keep your head whilst all around are losing theirs, you have probably completely misread the situation!!
