Whilst in the US the other week a few UK enthusiasts were saying that another US Carrier is due to make a lay-over at Portsmouth the 2nd week of April. Anybody else heard about this?

From Google:

It looks like the only possibility for a Nimitz class would be CVN-75 Harry S. Truman, currently 11Feb-17Mar 2016, Persian Gulf.
Edit: On closer study, CVN-73 George Washington and CVN-71 Theodore Roosevelt are recently showing as returned to home port in the US, so possibly could head this way?

Can the CVNs transit through the Panama Canal; I know the Suez Canal is used, but that's all sea level.

From:
http://www.popsci.com/article/technolog ... -shape-war
"In the years since, most warships have remained within the constraints of the canal, but a few haven’t. The U.S. Navy’s Enterprise- and Nimitz-class carriers are all too big for the canal (at around 1100 feet long and 130 feet wide), and the new Gerald R. Ford class of carriers will be as well, even after the canal finishes its latest expansion project".
That route looks like no for a Nimitz class, but a suggestion that "another US Carrier is due to make a lay-over at Portsmouth the 2nd week of April", does not suggest Nimitz anyway.
From what I can see, unless longer term maintenance, they do not seem to indicate future positioning of carriers. I would have thought CVN-75 Harry S. Truman would have a replacement on station before leaving, but that could be done via the Pacific .
Perhaps any among us that track shipping could assist?

The 'Washington' has gone into RCOH(refuelling and complex overhaul) the 'Roosevelt' is in post deployment status but is now Pacific based so won't be that one.
The Eisenhower is in surge ready status with the Atlantic fleet so could that or the Truman returning home from the Mid East. The Truman could be replaced by either the Eisenhower or the Stennis which is currently in the Sea of Japan/Yellow Sea area.

The Eisenhower should have done this deployment of the Truman, but because of additional repairs required during overhaul, the two deployments were swapped over.

The "Ike" is supposed to deploy late this year....but who knows.

I heard a rumour the Ike was to deploy this month but it has been put back apparently. In the last 15-20 years, I have only ever known of 1 carrier visiting Portsmouth on the homeward leg and that was Truman after the 2003 Iraq War. All the others have been on their way east. An attachment in another section listing aircraft participation for JW has no F-18's of any kind so I can't see any visit in the short term but I would like to be proved wrong!

Cant remember how long ago, but about 2 or 4 years ago an aircraft carrier turned up around the same time Obama had a state visit. Maybe the same is happening this time?

No one mentioned it was in connection with Joint Warrior though.

I believe that was bringing in US Coast Guard officers visiting Pompey dockyard. Personnel are believed to be departing Saturday so it may appear again.
