Greek F-16s arrived 12:35
P&V West not particularly busy but the staff had run out of movements sheets by 12:00 so we're just standing here wondering what's going to turn up.

Re: RIAT 2018 ARRIVALS
https://threshold.aero/data/RIAT18-Live-Arrivals Cheres, I'll keep an eye on that page. However from my OCD perspective there are some odd attempts at over-precision in that list. For example Boeing E-3D Sentry AEW.1 Douglas C-47A Dakota C.3 It's just a Douglas Dakota C.Mk.3 with the RAF. No need f...

Re: Happy Birthday C-5 50 YRS OLD
The RAF were offered a handful in the 1970s, but declined due to the run-down of Asian bases. Australia also considered the Galaxy to support their ops in Vietnam, and the Luftwaffe was interested but was blocked by the US State Department!

Re: General Atomics’ owned MQ-9B crossing the Atlantic to attend RIAT
The PR around this is curious, lots of conditional statements. There's nothing novel about the planned flight; the bigger Global Hawk UAV autonomously crossed the Atlantic and Pacific oceans over a decade ago. It is routinely used by NASA for hurricane-following flights out over the Atlantic. Yes it...

Re: How many military aviation enthusiasts in the UK?
The problem with asking the public to agree on this sort of thing is "Boaty McBoatface". Which wasn't a public suggestion, it was proposed by one of the staff. The fact that it became so popular probably inidicates something about the blandness of the 'approved' options. Quick, can you remember wha...

Nearly! The Harvard was in roundels from 1938 to 2016 ( latterly with ETPS ) and there's still one going with the RNHF.PeteHemsley wrote: ↑Thu Jun 21, 2018 11:00 amSurely the chipmunk is the longest serving RAF aircraft? (Without doing a Google search)

Re: New Zealand to buy P-8As
Not really a surprise given the advantages of commonality with Australia. But boring all the same.
Once Boeing got the P-8 into the FMS program it became the default choice for all aligned nations.

Re: Least favourite aircraft?
Mine has to be the Alpha Jet slow and boring, and why buy one when you could have bought a Bae Hawk. A321 Compare the airframe of an Alpha Jet ( smooth and clean, only flying surfaces sticking-out ) and a mid-80s+ Hawk ( strakes and smurfs and vortex generators all over the place ) and you'll get p...

Re: RAF wants to replace E3D
Barely 30 years, lol, assume you’re joking there. Let’s face it 30 years is a decent airframe life/pressurisation cycles life, it’s not dissimilar in the airline business. Do you still drive your car from 30 years ago and daily? Airlines hammer their aircraft, target utilisation is often 13 to 16 h...

PDA once again, tremendous achievement considering the year they have had The PDA is issued by RAF officers. Do people really think the RAF would refuse to certify the Red Arrows...? In the worst case they might have to make some tweaks to their routine and reapply but it's not as if the PDA is a o...

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2018 Discussion Thread
But find me an airshow that is on the level that RIAT is (In the UK) and none come close. With ongoing operations etc it's great what we can get. But you can't please 'em all. Don't like it, don't go, is my simple saying. Yes I think that's what I said too. And people are following that advice. Goi...

Re: US state dept approves C-130J sale to Germany
Hard to believe that six C-130Js can account for $1.4 billion ( even considering spares and support ). But that's the cost of a monopoly option I suppose, the A400 is in a category above and the C-27 much smaller. I think we'll look back on the A400 in 20 years time and agree that it was too big for...

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2018 Discussion Thread
DBH do a fantastic job year in year out, and it is easy for people to lump the blame onto them when in fact it's other Air Arms and/or countries that block these things happening Well they certainly do a 'job' but perhaps I'm too old and cynical to deploy the superlatives. They run an efficient air...

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2018 Discussion Thread
Thanks, is there anything wrong with me classing the C-130 as a heavy? It's not that big an aircraft, MTOW is within a tonne of an A320. Its wake turbulence doesn't qualify it as such either, it is Medium from memory. But this isn't a law court so you can call it whatever you like :) Incidentally w...

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2018 Discussion Thread
Saturday usually sells-out for general admission ( or at least has done so since I started going in 2013 ) but not Friday or Sunday. It will be interesting to see how Friday full-show sells this year, it's a challenge as most families would have to take leave from work to attend. Selfishly I hope it...
