Re: President Zelensky to visit UK today

Making the UK a bigger target is also a concern right? No. There is no concept of bigger/smaller target. Putin knows that an attack on the UK (or any other NATO country) automatically brings the whole of NATO into the war on (basically) Ukraines side. Do you honestly trust or believe he wouldn't do...

Re: President Zelensky to visit UK today

So far though I see no arguments against the Hawk T.1. This could perform limited offensive (rocket pods) and defensive (missile) capabilities. We have 30+ airworthy ones and we only use them for the red arrows now. This would send a powerful political message to US to send F-16s too We don’t need ...

Re: Highest Altitude Obtained by Eurofighter V Lightning

AIUI the air is so thin at 60000ft+ that you either need very large wings (U2), or to be travelling very fast (SR-71) in order to generate enough lift such that you can defy that pesky Newtons laws of gravity. Even if an F-15/F-22 could get to the altitude of the balloon, they would have to be trave...

Re: Highest Altitude Obtained by Eurofighter V Lightning

Apologies for the thread drift but back in the 1970s the F-15 streak eagle reached 100,000 feet in about 4 minutes As mentioned the typhoon performance is bound to be classified but I reckon 100,000 would be achievable although probably unnecessary unless you are after B- balloons. That was not in ...

Re: Leonardo (Yeovil Westland) sightings 2023

1st Feb 2023 09:00 Out on the ramp at 09:00 (I overslept!) was 0265 Merlin for Norway Norwegian serial uncovered, and no UK serial and all rotors/tail feathers attached. This would normally suggest imminent delivery, but the dayglow paint job is quite faded so it would be disapointing if they deliv...

Re: Davis-Monthan 15-May-1994

Fantastic I have seen spotters talking into dictaphones ... I did that several times in the '90s whilst on the old Air Force bus tour. Trouble was, there were usually quite a few Yanks on the bus too, and they often complained that they couldn't hear the commentary from the guide because of all the...

Re: Davis Monthan, Tucson & Pima

All three places are within 20 mins of each other - so you just need to get yourself to Tucson. AFAIK there are no direct flights to Tucson from the UK, but Phoenix is less than 2 hours drive away. Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego are probably the next closest. There is a well trodden route arou...

Visible from the bedroom window this morning

0283 AW101 612 for Norway

No UK serial, and Noggie serial uncovered. They're crewing up at the moment, so I expect a delivery flight to start in 30 minutes or so.

Cheers

Thursday 17th November 2022 10:00 Visible from the bedroom window this morning ZZ114 AW101 612 Also - forgot to post it last week, but ZR288 was out on the ramp last Thursday (10th Nov) - fully painted in the same 3 tone grey scheme as ZR286 and looked ready for flight. Polish serial covered in 4 i...

Re: Aviation nation Nellis air show 2022

Great air show, id don't suppose anyone with a super-duper camera managed to capture the serials of any pave-hawks on the way in or the f-35 and f-16 parked some distance away, did they? Thanks Ben Nellis AFB Sat 5th Nov 2022 A whistle stop (7:30-12:00) trip to "Aviaton Nation" produced the followi...

Re: B-17 Down at Dallas airshow

Talking of 'on-board' it awaits confirmation of minimum crew/min' fatalities on the B-17. According to a friend of mine, minimum crew on Sally B during displays is 4 persons - pilot, co-pilot and two engineers. The two engineers are required in-case of undercarrage lowering failure, when ...

Re: The Tories. A funny thing happened

I guess it is up to the devolved government to decide whom is entitled to vote but I would think parental resident status and place of birth are reasonable criteria No, it's not. Constitutuonal issues are "reserved" - meaning they are still decided by Westminster and are not devolved powers to Holy...

Re: The Tories. A funny thing happened

I personally don't think the SNP leader would countenance UK nationals who are not Scottish ( English, Welsh and Northern Ireland) participating in the vote and I would agree with her because potentially we would end up at square one - people in England preventing Scottish independence. But I do th...

Just found out. Sitting in departures at LAX waiting for the flight to Brisbane. Oh well - just have to go Roo hunting, or practice my snake and crocodile charming. Re: China's armed forces recruiting dozens of British ex military pilots

Alternatively, yourself, Malcolm et al could get on to your MP and the MoD and get the law changed and have them strung up for treason. Or would that be to much of an effort for you? I'm not in favor of retrospective legislation. If what they've done so far cannot be proven to be against the curren...

Re: China's armed forces recruiting dozens of British ex military pilots

We don't fly F3's anymore. I know, but I haven't worked on the Typhoon or F-35 simulators to know if there are differences between UK and non-UK training programs. I'd bet there are though, and if someone was found to have disclosed those differences to a foreign power I've no doubt they'd be in ho...

Cheapest was Virginia area, where it was $3.60...
