Thanks all for your replies and research, knew I could rely on the helpful folk on this forum. That makes perfect sense, also means that if the canopy was partly smashed or compromised, but they didn't need to leave the aircraft, they would have a better chance of being able to navigate home I guess...

Shame no one would have been able to capture it lifting off with light snow cover around the base...

I always thought that it went up to the top of the canopy.

Looking at pics online it only comes about 1/3 of the way up i think.

Quick question on the Bucc. What was the purpose of the clear wrap around screen in front of the back seater in the Bucc? I've often wondered as it looks different to most of the setups at the time (apart from the Gnat maybe). TIA.

When you live next to the base the difference between a U-2 and a C-17 is quite apparent! Can confirm no U-2 was up that early

A contact on base tells me a pogo wheel failed to detach, hence needing to avoid populated areas. Whelford road was also closed for the landing.
