Re: French AF aircraft on civil register?
I think the British military used a 5 letter callsign based on the aircrafts radio station . I remember Shackletons using calls like MFHJK sometimes preceded by Rafair.

Re: Typhoon jet shoots down drone of Syria
Will the RAF call this its first kill since 1948 or do drones not count. (I know the F4 v Jag incident but shooting your own side down is just silly)

Re: if the MOD was run by fighter control...
A radical clean sweep from me. Bin the F35 and visit Davis Monthan to get some good used plane deals. The Navy would be expected to bring Her Majesty some spoils from its voyages and perhaps a bit of extorsion with the Subs ( nice Capital you have there ,shame if it got broken). The Army would absor...

Re: Switzerland Selects F-35
Hmmm I wonder if the manufacturer used the same method as the sale of F104s to Germany . The GNY had the option of Buccs or F104s it should have been a no brainer to pick the Bucc.

This should be cancelled and the F35Bs should be doing hovering practice round Jersey.

Re: Royal International Air Tattoo 2021 - General Discussion Thread
More good news. The USAF seem to be getting their vaccine out to their troops so the thought of all those disease ridden foreigners coming into FFD won't be a problem.

Re: MILDENHALL Wx DIVERTS
Some military crews prefer diverting to civil airfields to avoid some of the military BS they have grown tired of . I used to work at a BAe airfield and we had a good canteen and shops within walking distance. I went to lunch with a crew once and asked why the did not use a military airfield that wa...

Re: Nimrod or Breguet Atlantic
I think you could easily have been flying in an Avro 776 rather than the HS801 .The designer of the project at Manchester told me it was a very close decision and it was a late night phone call that stopped the Trident option going ahead. There are some pics on the web that give some idea of what it...

Re: Nimrod or Breguet Atlantic
The NATO users of the Atlantique could easily have ended up with the similar Avro 745 which also use 2 Tynes and had a similar layout. The RAF waited a further 10 years and ordered the Nimrod. I spoke to an old Avro designer and the industry wanted to use the Trident as a basis for the Nimrod but th...

Re: UK Airshow's 1970's 80's
I did not keep a Log but I remember that many RAF aircraft at shows used used a normal RAF Trigraph eg HDY 17 . It was quite easy to recognise most aircraft types by the background noise to the transmission Vulcans hi pitched tone , Gnats sounded like the pilot was playing a Stylophone.

Make it topless might sell a couple more tickets, linesperson and refs in black stockings, basques and garters, Benny Hill theme tune as the teams arrive on the pitch with Phil Neville chasing them in a policemans uniform waving a truncheon.

Re: How bad is your ISP
Apart from Virgin all the other ISPs use bits of copper and in some areas aluminium wire. I have had problems with multiple ISPs and eventually open-reach come and swap wires. This transfers the issue to someone else in the road . Eventually they do lots of complaining and it gets moved back to me ....

Re: English Channel hunt for wreck of stolen Mildenhall C-13
I wouldn't think a Lightning would have the range to get to near Guernsey where it went down . At low to medium level it would need a F4 to get from East Anglia and back . A ex Bentwaters controller said it was one of their jets that got it, So many conflicting stories about this, perhaps the truth ...

Re: Even you can land an F-35B
I spoke to a F35B pilot at an airshow and he trotted out the usual "its all marvellous" line. I asked what he flew previously he said the Harrier so I asked which was the most fun to fly he looked around to make sure no-one was listening and he said it was the Harrier by a mile.
