Re: GR1 Odds & Sodds

Hi Taff,
I can always find myself on the Laarbruch pic because I was careful to stand with an AIM9 pointing at me.

Now that the old girl has gone I took the opportunity to dig around my filing cabinet and find some old prints, some of which have never seen the light of day before: 1983, three 617 Sqn jets at Toronto for the airshow do a flyby of a press helicopter over Niagra Falls https://farm8.staticflickr.com...

Re: Tornado meet TTTE Cottesmore 1988

It was 14 October 1988, my 30th birthday. We took a coach-load of aircrew from TWCU at Honington. As it arrived at the quarters of our USAF exchange crew at 8am they hoisted a very large cool box in through the back doors; Major Marlo Mellum handed me a can and said 'happy birthday mate.' I didn't s...

Looks like Marham during the squadron exchange with 617 Sqn:

Thanks for posting these Steve. Like Taff I was on 16 at the time but I was promoted into my next job at midnight on the day after you took the images. I'm glad to see them because I have no memory of the weekend at all! Blame Mr Warsteiner for that.

When you're out on the airfield late at night and you stumble upon a Griffin it would be rude not to take a piccie.

Re: Old Hawks

Hi Folks, I don't know how I missed this thread first time around but a Google image search has brought me here after I took part in a similar topic on Pprune. I flew on the famous CHIVENOR formation, I am in the back seat of 'N' and the only one with a white helmet. As I said on Pprune we were all ...

Lovely stuff Taff, those were the days. You wouldn't like what they've done to the old place since though.

The people do look happy to see low-flying jets in Holland, although that's not quite how I remember it from the 80s and 90s. :)

I once asked the Range Officer at Wainfleet about colour schemes for range buildings. He told me that yellow & black looks like brown at typical strafe open-fire range.

Re: Tornado GR1/GR1A,GR4/GR4A Thread

Make that 131 then, spoilsport :)

It only appears once, my third trip at TWCU 14 Jan 1983, I wonder which number I mangled to get that?

I'm not alone, however, if you Google it you can find at least 2 people who think they've got photos of it.

Thanks Mike.

Re: Tornado GR1/GR1A,GR4/GR4A Thread

Thanks for this Folks, loving the nostalgia. Being very sad I sat down with my navigator's log book last night and discovered that I have flown in 122 of the aircraft listed in the original post, although that includes ZA565 which seems to be missing. During the course at Cottesmore I also flew in 2...

The gliders use the runway. They park on the ORP at the far end all day along with their runway caravan/briefing/crewroom and shuttle personnel about from there. Their offices are in the old SSA and the aircraft are stored in the NE HAS site.

Re: RAF Honington

Still 122.1 because of the Flying Club and transiting helos. There was once a suggestion that the frequency would change if the Police or Ambulance teams moved in.
