Re: F1 2024

For all those thoroughly fed up with another dull F1 season, check out the US MotoGP from this weekend which will be on ITV4. What a race! Also World Superbikes from Barcelona a couple of weeks ago, more lead changes than you can shake a stick at.

Re: RAF Boeing H-47ER

I expect there will be at least 14 retirements from the existing fleet, if not all originals bought in the early 1980s.

Ah yes, we flew in by Vauxhall Carlton courtesy of my mate Dave who did the trip from Stowmarket, Suffolk in just under two hours. Plus the A1 still had roundabouts back then :'(

Re: Masters of the Air - USAF Mighty 8th in East Anglia

I think it's superb. Captures the horror and stress of combat missions and also life at an East Anglian airfield. Yes, the CGI could be better in places, but as a narrative on the Eighth I think it hits the spot. Also if you've taken out an Apple subscription just for this, have a look at Tom Hanks'...

Re: ZJ940

I've found evidence of ZJ945 departing for the Falklands on 12th September 2009 (https://www.fast-air.co.uk/raf-coningsby-falklands-typhoon-flight-1435/) but it returned to Coningsby on Tuesday 22nd September as ASCOT 9615, so I guess it got as far as Ascension island. That flight may mean the airfr...

Re: ZJ940

Resurrecting an old thread, but have ZJ940, ZJ945 and ZJ948 ever flown since arriving at Coningsby 17 years ago?? With the imminent Tranche 1 withdrawal they must be the three with the lowest hours, I'd be surprised if it was double figures for each!

Re: Wittering runway resurfacing.

Grobs will stay at Wittering and use the north taxiway as a runway while the main runway is done. As much as I'd like F-35s there, Marham has plenty of space and it'll be decades, if ever, the RAF gets 130 of them. Looking forward to more transport ops though.

Re: Air Fete banished to History.....Prediction?

There was a genuine attempt to bring the airshow back in about 2012 (can't recall the exact year). Base personnel contacted the Waddington Airshow team to find out what was required in terms of organisation as all previous Air Fete personnel had moved on. Why it didn't happen is probably only known ...

Re: RAF Hawk display pilots

Nor sure if its relevant, in this post in the photography section https://www.fightercontrol.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=18&t=239309 4 minutes in there's an RN Hawk display team, is it exclusively RAF solo you're after? Thanks, Black Seahawks I think they were called. Displayed with FRA/Cobham Falc...

RAF Hawk display pilots

I'm putting together a book on the BAe Hawk ahead of its 50th anniversary next year and one chapter will be about display flying. I have most pilot names for the list but nothing for 1982 and for 1985 have a Flt Lt Brown from 4 FTS, but no christian name - can anyone help fill these gaps? Full list ...

Honington is an airfield again!

According to the Station magazine, RAF Honington is again officially a 'Tier 1 aerodrome' with based aircraft, albeit just the Viking gliders of 611 VGS. I recall the then Station Commander saying the airfield would be home to aircraft again 'sometime in the future' when the Tornados left in 1994, s...
