Re: 1979 IAT Greenham Common

1979 was also my first Greenham. When the heavens opened on the Sunday morning we sheltered under the wing of the Italian Atlantique, which didn’t afford much protection! Thanks for sharing.

Re: lack of info???

Back in the day a note would be left with your early morning milk delivery of what was in or due in  Some of the older locals will know what I mean by that ;) Oh yes, I remember those days :) I too, along with my brother "Redhound", graduated from the Central Dairy School of Aircr...

Tornado 04.03.14

I saw a Tornado this afternoon around 2.30pm as I was driving west down the hill into the Glynn Valley on the A38 west of Liskeard. A few minutes later after I had passed Trago I heard it again, or was it another?

Re: Radome partly dismantled

What I take from all of the discussion above, and on some other threads under "Culdrose", is that there is a community of spotters in this locality who first and foremost want to see aircraft. Unfortunately, these days military aircraft are fewer and farther between rendering the hobby more frustrat...

Re: Splendid.

Regarding the star asset: I appreciate things are probably a little busy for him at the moment, and he could well be on paternity leave by 24.07, but picking up on the SAR theme - perhaps it's Prince William in a Sea King 3 given that the precedent was set in 1975 (I think) when Prince Charles flew ...

Re: Why did FRADU move?

I can't remember how dovetailed the change was, but I seem to recall that the departure of 705 sqdn was in some way offset with the relocation of FRADU to Culdrose, even implying in the press at the time that the noise of jet aircraft operating from the base was worth it to secure it's long-term fut...

Re: apache

There are now 3 Apaches on C site. One was there when I arrived at the viewing enclosure, one came in as Army Air 439 (I believe) around 1330 and then another appeared, I assume, from a hangar, as it wasn't there the first time I looked! Did the two from last week stop over the weekend?

Helston is pretty much defined by Flora Day and RNAS Culdrose - I very much associate Geoff with both and am glad I have a copy of his book.

Harrier Exeter

Noted today at 4.00pm on the back of a lorry on the A30 to join M5. I assume an ex-SAH/SFDO one from Culdrose/Predannack. It appeared to be a GR3.

Re: RAF St Mawgan 1976

Thanks for posting these photos. I was 16 then and pleaded with my Dad to drive me up to St Mawgan from Helston on the Saturday afternoon (23.10.76). The weather was pretty murky but I saw my first USMC aircraft, the only Skywarriors I have ever seen, and some 34 visiting aircraft (12 x A6E, 4 x EA6...

Penzance Heliport

Passing the heliport this evening I saw a 771 Sqdn Sea King (coded 27) on the ground. It is the first current military helicopter I have seen there in over 6 years of working at Penzance - good job it has called in now as I assume the field won't be operational much longer.

Re: Culdrose Visitors - Oct

And anything yesterday evening (Mon 15.10)? I ask because at 9.15pm I was near the harbour at Porthleven when a jet came in from over the sea and turned as if to join runway 12 - an unusual approach. Only clues, 2 red starboard lights and sounding more like a Falcon 20 than a hawk.

Re: Ascot 1388 inbound

I'm wondering if it is Prince Charles visiting his Duchy estate on Scilly? Certainly he has done so on this weekend in the past, I remember seeing a Wessex HCC4 several years ago fly over Porthleven in the early evening on the way out. Have 771 been to the islands this afternoon? If so, we can look ...

Re: Lightnings @ RNAS Culdrose Airday 1987

Happy days indeed. I was in the static area when "BE" taxied in and we were able to gather around as the pilot got out. Chris L greeted him like a long-lost friend saying, "Let me shake your hand, you are the first Lightning ever to land here, the runway was always too short before!", to which he sa...

I assume this is the Chinook I saw from my office in Penzance just after 2pm. It circled and appeared to land at Penwith College.

Re: hawks at vl

Seems to me it would be pointless moving FRADU, with the proposed out of service date for the Hawk 2 or 3 years away. thats a very good point! so the next qustion would be what would thay replace the hawks with?? :pop: i guess thay would just pick the best of the bunch and run them for a lot longer...

Re: Holiday Log!

Glad you are enjoying your sojourn in this part of the country - a little r+r goes a long way. Did you catch the Apache at 1326 landing on the dummy deck? It was refueled and then was doing circuits on the DD as I was leaving at around 1400.
