Re: Spitfire Down
When you book flights in these lovely old aircraft, it's done on the basis of 'informed consent' Basically, they are old and can break, so you fly at your own risk. Compare the number of flights with incidents, and the odds are on your side, with more chance of getting hurt travelling to and from th...

Re: Lakenheath open on good Friday?
PS my last.
Does anyone else here remember the hoo-haa raised when Egyptian Military 01 arrived at Mildenhall on a Good Friday 40 or so years ago? It was carrying President
Sadat over to Camp David to sign a peace deal with Israel. Everyone scoffed at the idea until it called up of final.

Re: Congestion on A15 and near miss Tuesday.
Could we please get a bit of common sense back into this discussion? Let's take a scientific approach: A person at 90 kgs, and travelling at 3 mph is in contact with a 1 tonne vehicle travelling at 30+ mph. Who comes off worse? You are all, more or less, responsible adults. Why put your life in the ...

Re: Which ATC Squadron are/were you a member of?
Browsing back through this thread, I see I made my contribution back in 2010! Well, after retiring as a Flt Lt I did another 8 years as a Ci, finally retiring in March 2018. In all,I did 40+ years as an instructor, of which I am very proud. Seeing young people come in the door as rather shy, retirin...

Florida break October 1990
I've been scanning some old slides taken at a couple of locations in Florida during October 1990. There are a few gaps in my records that I hope some of you might be able to help me fill. First off, during a visit to Tom Reilly's place at Kissimmee on 20 Oct 90 I have a few spaces. Outside was a fus...

Reaper,
I've visited Coningsby a few times over the years, first off when they had Phantoms. I've some images if you might want them. Drop me a pm with dates and types and I'll see what I might find for you.

Re: Top Gun inside the RAF C4
Please remember that for the majority of the great British Public, the RAF begins and ends with the Red Arrows. How many know that for many, many years, we've had jets in Cyprus, dropping bombs on the Kings enemies? Maybe now those people wil get a small idea of what goes on outside of soap-opera Br...

Re: RAF to get F35A ?
Seconded, Enobob.
Surely the F35B is classed as a STOVL (Short Take Off /Vertical landing)Aircraft? As far as I recall, even the Harrier needed a take off run to get airborne with any significant payload.
Vertical take offs were simply for air show, and other, demonstrations.

Re: Top Gun inside the RAF C4
All in all, an interesting programme. What wasn't stated was the huge effort it must have taken to co-ordinate all the jets on CAP during the Israeli drone shoot. Now we can appreciate all the efforts that go into Cobra Warrior type exercises, and how well all these different assets work together. W...

Re: Lakenheath back to full strength
Back in the day, Lockheed supplied various techies to support the SR71 det at Mildenhall. There's a long history of various companies doing this, so would imagine that there are Boeing tec-reps at Lakenheath, to support the local F15 force.

Re: RAF to get F35A ?
Going back to the discussion on HAS earlier. One point to remember is that your enemy cannot see through it, so would have to target all those on a base to be sure of whacking all the operational jets. How many HAS did we hit in GW 1, only to find nothing inside? As for the third Heathrow runway, I ...

Re: Military drones training in low fly?
Why risk a valuable asset when you have high fidelity simulators? I appreciate it's different for manned systems, who need to practice OLF. Also, since UAS are likely to be low observable, why go low level? This only adds stress to the airframes needing higher strength structures (=weight). Just my ...

Re: RAF to get F35A ?
If I remember exactly, the original plan was for the P8 and Wedgetail to be based at Waddington. This made sense as it's the ISTAR hub. If more f35's were ordered, would Leeming make a good place as a second hub? No matter how we speculate, we'll not hear anything util those in charge see fit to tel...
