Re: Nikon D7500

It's still interesting to compare settings. How about exposure options? I sometimes use Av, setting an aperture and having the camera sort out a shutter speed, having checked that it's within a suitable range for the area where the action is happening. With props I tend to use Tv, setting a speed th...

Re: Nikon D7500

My typical setting for aircraft in flight is AF-C with 3D-tracking mode. All the other suggestions apply as well though, so pick an aperture setting that provides a bit of leeway and make sure that you are at a shutter speed that is fast enough to freeze the action. There is quite a difference betwe...

Re: C-47A slide from 1979 scanned and processed in Topaz AI

Impressive result! I do think there are some parts of the image where it shows that the AI didn't know what to do with the information. Still, it looks very convincing to me.

Silly thought, but are you running the StopForumSpam extension? It keeps a lot of strange registrations off my board.

Re: Valoi Easy 35

I understand, if the slide was a bit underexposed to begin with it is easy to end up with something like this. I am not familiar with the Canon RAW editing software but looking at that image in Photoshop gets me this: https://www.VC10.net/div/ScreenshotLevels.png The peak at the extreme right end ar...

Re: Valoi Easy 35

Result! Looking forward to seeing more slides from your collection! One little tip: have a look at the levels on that Phantom shot. The glare on the fuselage is completely blown out to pure white. Setting the highlight level correctly (you may need to shoot the slide so that, initially, it's a bit d...

You did. Having seen many photos with lovely blue skies from the Saturday... I'm only slightly jealous. I still enjoyed the show though!

Re: Valoi Easy 35

Experience with this? No, but it doesn't look all that different from the various slide copy attachments that have been sold over the years. Here is a Nikon option that is actually a lot cheaper (although it does not have a built-in lightbox): https://www.nikon.co.uk/en_GB/product/accessories/lenses...

Re: How do you actually get to Duxford airshow by car?

The IDs of the stuff in the restoration hangar and the hangar with flying aircraft can be a bit of a puzzle as signs may be around, but they get moved/shuffled around as airframes are moved around and may not always be in the ideal place. It's part of the charm of an active airfield and restoration ...

Re: Tempest Revealed at Duxford 13th Sept

It is elusive... it was hiding in a hangar during last weekend's BofB show. I caught it during the end-of-show reshuffle though. The programme did list it in the line-up, as flying with the P-47 and F8F but that spot was taken by the Fury ISS instead. I guess they need to do more testing first. http...

Re: Scorching Duxford

I can only agree with the previous post. I went on the Sunday so missed the F-35 display, but it did not dampen my spirits. A wonderful day... only marred by the fact that the light is so bad at a Duxford show, which I had forgotten about. Oh well.... https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/54001878645_...

Re: Sony a77 pixel question

Having the camera crop your picture vs cropping it yourself *should* produce the same end result. The problem is that having the camera do this may introduce other effects, artefacts... I don't know what. I have always steered clear of digital zoom (as it's sometimes marketed) and have applied it my...

Re: Head Spinning - Newbie DSLR Purchase

I ran shutter priority with about 1/2500 shutter and manually upped ISO quite high to 1000/1600 but they're all dark. I played around with different metering modes, typically using spot or center weighted. I was clearly doing something wrong as others with similar settings were getting much better ...

Re: New camera - newbie questions

1) Up to you. Mine lives in the bag all year round. 2) Depends on how much you're going to throw the bag around. As long as it's resting on the padding when carried normally, you should be fine. 3) I don't know that bag... but lens down or sitting on its bottom are the common ways of storing a camer...

Re: Head Spinning - Newbie DSLR Purchase

Simple things like it wanting to use flash in auto mode etc; need to work out how to stop that when not needed aside from using the no flash mode. You can't prevent the flash from popping up if you're in the Auto mode, but the no-flash mode is basically what you're looking for. This is Auto but wit...

Re: Head Spinning - Newbie DSLR Purchase

How 'backwards compatible' are lens and bodies? If I get a D7100/7200 and a lens, then decide I'm hooked and go for something better/newer, will I have to replace lenses too? Assuming I stay Nikon of course. Nikon is very good at that. All F-mount lenses should fit all DSLR/SLR bodies although func...

Re: Head Spinning - Newbie DSLR Purchase

All depends on how much you want to spend. My personal view: now is an excellent time to buy secondhand DSLRs as lots of people are moving to mirrorless and you can pick up an extremely capable camera and lens for a decent price. Because of that, I would suggest getting the D7100 and 70-300 lens. Yo...
