Operation Highmast
Forgot to post this earlier, worth having a thread on the subject. Highmast is the sequel to CSG21, but this time its HMS Prince of Wales on an approx 7 month deployment with 24 F-35Bs embarked, among other things. https://www.raf.mod.uk/news/articles/uk-carrier-strike-group-embarks-on-collaborative...

US return to Afghanistan? (Unconfirmed)
I was surprised to see this to say the least. No major news websites reporting it yet but various sources say the USA flew several C-17s to Bagram with Taliban permission, although the latter have denied the story. We’ll have to wait and see. https://bulgarianmilitary.com/amp/2025/04/08/taliban-hand...

John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway DFC
Seen on the RAF LinkedIn page just now. More info here: https://raf.mod.uk/news/articles/the-last-surviving-battle-of-britain-pilot-john-paddy-hemingway-dfc-passes-away/ Rest in peace. It is with great sadness we announce the passing of John ‘Paddy’ Hemingway DFC – the last Battle of Britain Pilot. ...

Train spotting 😀 My goodness not having LN would be end of days ! It’s not that bad a hobby, yes it’s got sh*tter in recent years if you like BR locos and all that but as my profile pic shows, there’s still a few old timers running! As for losing LN, it would be a bit of a broadside to the plane ho...

Re: Defence Spending
2.5% by 2027 confirmed. 3% by next parliament. Money to be diverted from the foreign aid budget into defence. This is a great outcome. What is urgently needed now is the Strategic Defence Review to be delayed so that it can take into account the extra money and a new 3-year Equipment Plan drawn up....

Re: Top Gun inside the RAF C4
Great PR but i would prefer to see more propaganda about shortages and the need to re arm the RAF ASAP. Giving billions to Ukraine is barmy if our defences are in such a perilous position. F35 deliveries are a glacial pace. There is talk of the early Typhoons going, even though they are surely a ma...

Re: RAF to get F35A ?
. Anyway, I stick with my original thought, in that if we did have the money for more assets, then it should be more F35Bs. Easy to disperse, and no runway required. Huh? Don’t forget that aircraft are always heavier on takeoff due to having more fuel and, in some circumstances, ordnance, than on l...

Numbers are important but if the Russian air force had achieved air superiority/ air dominance with fast jets then would they have needed North Koreans in the first place?

Re: Potential RAF Typhoon Tranche 4 Order - 25 Aircraft
I’d be somewhat surprised if it gets the go ahead, but I hope it does! Current OOS date is 2040 I think for our existing Typhoons of tranche 2/3 but that could slip?

Re: Romania joins F-35 Lightning II program
A pity for us plane cranks but surely it’s better in the long run to have the best kit than clinging on to multiple outdated types. Especially since we’re firmly in Cold War 2.

Re: UK to scrap some warships, helicopters and drones
“The Jaguar was at the top of its game after the upgrades & had a good few years left at the time of retirement” quoted by Wing Commander John Sullivan. He was highly unlikely to say anything other than that given he was head of the Jaguar force at the time. Ok wind your neck in 🤣🤣 it was the truth...

Re: UK to scrap some warships, helicopters and drones
My Jag pilot friends might have something to say about that 😊 Do tell… what capabilities were lost when Jaguar was retired? Genuinely curious. At the time we had Tornado GR4 and Harrier GR7 for mud moving and as for Tiffie this was just prior to Tranche 1 Typhoons getting an austere air to ground c...

Re: UK to scrap some warships, helicopters and drones
Don't forget, it was the Tories who scrapped Harrier, Nimrod, Jaguar, Sentry and Sentinel, leaving us with huge capability gaps! Add Tornado and remove Jaguar although to be fair, I don’t think retiring Jag left much of a capability gap. Likewise Tornado, although that had RAPTOR which I think has ...
