I've got the Nikon fit 1.4 and 2.0 The 1.4 is very good indeed, no noticable speed difference in focus and still pretty sharp on my 300 f2.8 Sigma. The 2x can take a while to focus and is noticably less sharp - as one would expect really.

Spot metering can help, just make sure you keep it on the aircraft, easier said than done sometimes! AS Pete said dial in some exposure compensation, at least +1 should help.
