Re: Fairford 1993 - 30th anniversary of that Air Tattoo

I was there! I was just relating to a friend in the pub that at the time I thought it was the last time I would ever see an operational F-4! And this year two Greek F-4Es are expected, though I can’t be there. Rats!

Re: Ramstein September 4th, 1969

Very nice. I don't remember Phantoms without airbase code letters. What's the story on that? Distinctive unit identifiers were introduced in USAFE from January 1970 (81st TFW) to April 1970 (32nd TFS). Strictly speaking they identify the units rather than the base, though many derive from the base ...

Wonderful. I have seen many images from that deployment but none in flight. Thank you.

Yes the two letter codes were applied in USAFE from January 1970, the 81st TFW codec their aircraft that month.

Wonderful stuff. Are you sure No.6 is 69-0377? Looks like 69-0382 again.

Just spotted this. 66-7750 was not with the 81st TFW. Let me know if you need anything else clarified. It’s very much my thing.

Crested Cap Tankers 02/10/78

Hi All,

I am helping a friend with some details on the KC-135s that were launched from RAF Mildenhall on 2nd October 1978.

We have 57-1472 or 59-1472 and

57-1507 or 57-1507.

Would anybody be able to tell me which was which? Any other details gratefully received.

Thanks in advance.

Alan

Splendid. The best images I have seen of this arrival by far. I understand the light was somewhat challenging.

VF-74 F-4Js visiting Scotland 1978.

Hi All, Not so much a serial tie up as a date tie up. Can anyone tell me the date the following visited Lossiemouth, Kinloss or Leuchars (I think) please. Would have been between April and October 1978. F-4J 153910/AA206 F-4J 157307/AA210 Also was it just these two or were there more? Thanks in adva...

Re: 86TFW Phantoms

Brings back great memories. Remember them flying over my work in Ipswich, a moment later my boss sends me out to a job right by RAF Bentwaters. Remember chatting to a chap by the end of the runway with a Triumph 1500 with sharks teeth painted on it.
