Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020

Wasn’t one of the reasons for Mildenhall to close that it needed lots of investments to be updated to modern standards? As construction works have been going on at Ramstein for getting the tankers there, I can still see that happen. As for Trump... who knows what will happen if he is not elected aga...

Re: US Army to La Rochelle

If any stragglers are still there by that time, it is doubtful if they will be visible (don’t know the port of La Rochelle). But the US Army put walls of containers around the docks they were using in Bremerhaven, Zeebrugge and Rotterdam. So don’t put your hopes too high unfortunately.

Probably less then that, it seems part of the helo’s will be unloaded in La Rochelle, and another part of them will be delivered to Volos, Greece.

Re: Finland's air force quietly drops swastika symbol

During the airshow at Kuopio in 2016 we saw an Opel (Vauxhall for you) Omega, painted in old camouflage and adorned with big blue Swastika, the old Finnish air force symbols. It did not attract much attention by the many people walking by. Apparently they know their history and symbols, and did not ...

Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020

The USAF is investing in Molesworth, Fairford, Lakenheath, Croughton, Spangdahlem and Ramstein. But still no investments or announcements made for Mildenhall (I know it was slated to close). Isn’t that a sign that closing is still not off the table?

Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020

It is just nice words. He is not the one deciding what happens to the future of Mildenhall. I would not expect too much of investment or future announcements in the current situation. With the covid 19 financial effects to the USA, I expect that somewhere money will have to be saved in the future. A...

Is it based at the airport, or do they have their base somewhere else?

Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020

On the other hand, if the F-16’s from Spangdahlem move to Poland, it makes plenty of space available for moving the 352nd to Spangdahlem. Since Mildenhall is a very outdated airbase, and Spangdahlem already seen a lot of modernising going on, that might be an option.

Re: RAF Mildenhall to close. Lakenheath to get F-35 by 2020

It all depends on what happens in Trumps mind. Today he wants to pull out 9.500 troops out of Germany. Maybe next week he wants to add 20.000? With that guy you can never know. And if he is still in power after november, no one knows. So don’t jump to any conclusions yet.

Re: Eurofighters for Egypt ?

IIRC the Egyptian military shopping spree is partially financially supported by Saudi Arabia. Whether they will still do that during the current crisis (oil revenues have dropped) remains to be seen

And... if they were really interesting aircraft, which you might be able to see only “once in a lifetime” I could understand.... but they were BA747’s. Go to Heathrow on a normal day and you couldn’t even bother
