Re: RAF Stanley F-4's 1984

Back in March '83, I was based in Stanley with the Royal Irish Rangers, attached to 40 Commando as a member of a mortar section. The pictures have brought back some happy memories especcially the sparks from the hook. Our Mortar pit was just yards away from the runway and right next to the arrestor ...

Re: Duxford July Bimbles ~ *UPDATE 9~31Jul16*

Whilst browsing this topic, just put two and two together with a local event near me and reported in the local paper and realised that the Alouette 2 in the second picture crashed on July 17th at Breighton in Yorkshire, 5 injured and sadly one of them has since died. The allouette is reported as wri...

Re: Engine runs

I spotted it to just to the East of Howden heading northwest then banked Northerly, sadly lost it behind trees and never saw it again as I was cycling back to Beverley on Monday. My records from my satnav tell me it was 1718 when I was in the location so I presume it was heading towards Elevington

Re: RAF Cowden East Yorkshire

I cannot confirm it, but the F111 hitting the sea was filmed by someone at Withernsea. There is links online to the film but they do not take you anywhere 24th or 25th July 1979, F-111E 68-0042 crashed off Tunstall into the North Sea is the only reference I can find to it, and cannot even find links...

Re: RAF Cowden East Yorkshire

I used to see the occasional member of the EOD clearing the range turning up at Leconfield and they reckoned it would be about 10 years before it could be handed over as the whole range has to dug up to a certain depth and the soil sieved to remove all ordnance that has been dropped or fired over th...

The unofficial 50th anniversary of the RAF 1968

Came across this today whilst browsing the net about Hawker Hunters, first I have heard of it, but it brought a smile to my face during the stressful time of Xmas. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hawker_Hunter_Tower_Bridge_incident And in his own words:- http://www.rafjever.org/4sqnper004.htm Wonder wh...

Re: Falklands '84

Seeing those Phantoms takes me back to '83 when I was at Navy Point opposite Stanley. At one point the powers to be, the top brass in Stanley got fed up with us not saluting officers out in the field (something we do not do on operations) so demanded that we start saluting. At the time we was diggin...

Re: 50th RAF Anniversary at Leconfield

There has been no fixed wing flights since the Army took over (apart for one instance), the runway and taxiways were all converted into a nursery circuit for driver training with roundabouts and road signs built on the main runways, but they were all temporary and could have been cleared off at any ...

Re: 50th RAF Anniversary at Leconfield

We used to sit in the bushes at the South end of the runway with everything landing skimming over our heads. We also used to have a small radio tuned to 108mhz and listen to the tower. I rarely went down to the crashgate, but my fondest memory when we did was always when the lightnings took a short ...

50th RAF Anniversary at Leconfield

I came across this document this morning whilst searching for something totally different and out of curiosity I opened it up and was quite amazed to see the listing of exhibits for the open day at RAF Leconfield in 1968. It would be brilliant to turn the clocks back and see all those Lightning etc ...

Re: Seaking 128 - ID Request

So XZ599 will be what looked like XZ569 to me. Whenever I have my Bino's, there is nothing to see, and when there is I don't have them handy and the old MK1 eyeball is not as good as it used to be. But there was no failing to spot that there was three Sea Kings which are big enough to spot even with...

Re: Seaking 128 - ID Request

As of November, there is three Seakings at the moment, but my details are a bit sketchy, definetley ZE370 / T and also P, and the serial numbers which are a bit sketchy are ZE368 or ZE 369 and what looked like XZ569 but is not right. One of then did not have a letter, just a serial number. Hope that...
