Re: F3 Finale Leeming 24/28 March 2011

Yes. Those were the days as Freddie Mercury once sang. Nice to hear some appreciation of a much maligned jet. According to Chris, who owns Jetart Aviation and was previously XI Sqn. groundcrew on one exercise in Alaska they were registering kills at an unbelievable rate thanks to ASRAAM and JTIDS. B...

F3 Finale Leeming 24/28 March 2011

The final flight of the Tornado F3 in RAF service took place with the delivery of the last three aircraft on the strength of the disbanded 111 Squadron into retirement at RAF Leeming on 28 March 2011. The three comprised ZE734/JU (the Squadron flagship), ZE 791 (which had received a special paint sc...

Re: Leeming, April 94 - Corsairs

Sadly this was one of the few deployments at that period I never got a 'heads up' on and this is the first I've heard of it, so thanks for posting. I think probably the only visit from the Portuguese.

Linton Families Day '06

Came across a disc with pics of the '06 Linton Families Day which maybe of interest. While it was nt the best what would we give for such an event today? The 33 Sqn Ann. Puma was a bonus as was the arrival of a NAW Harrier. Sad to think that the days of this type were numbered thanks to the incoming...

Re: Waddington 1999 airshow

This would have been a good show, sadly spoiled by the weather on the Sunday when I attended. Rain set in during the afternoon and put the dampers on it.

Great set from a great show Paul. Do you have a pic of the Norwegian F-16 which can be seen in that NATO 50th Ann line -up?

Re: NATO 50th Ann cplour schemes - 1999

Very nice Paul. All enhanced by the superb light and blue sky. Surely someone gave a Tornado the treatment? Did you get the Aeronavale Super Eterndard which had a sort of half hearted scheme i.e. one side only?

NATO 50th Ann cplour schemes - 1999

As it's the 75th anniversary of NATO this year I expect there will be a few specially marked a/c around, some of which will hopefully find their way over here, most probably to RIAT. At the last significant anniversary in 1999 I did get to see a couple of the commemorative schemes, images of which a...

Re: 6 Sqn. (The Flying Can Openers) reach 110

For those of you who are interested here's a photo I found of the impressive Vickers cannon armament of the Hurricane IID operated by 6 Sqn. in the Western Desert which earned them their Flying Can-openers nickname. https://live.staticflickr.com/65535/53577423697_413b273800_c.jpg 6 Sqn Hurricane IID...

Re: 6 Sqn. (The Flying Can Openers) reach 110

Thanks to all of you for yr contributions which are superb esp the flying shot of EN through the M6 pass and as for that close up of 90 Ann tail marking it looks like the paint is still wet! Apparently the 'Gunner's Stripe' marking dates back to the Sqn's first artillery shoot mission in November 19...

Re: 6 Sqn. (The Flying Can Openers) reach 110

Well done for spotting the deliberate mistake on the date of the Phantom pic guys. Good to know you've been paying attention! I'm hoping to see some more shots of 6 Sqn. Phantoms correctly dated. Anyone think of any other squadrons whose a/c wore badges other those officially approved? The only othe...

6 Sqn. (The Flying Can Openers) reach 110

At the end of January 6 Sqn., known as 'The Flying Can - Openers' celebrated its 110th Ann. at Lossiemouth by taking delivery of Jaguar airframe XX119 in the iconic Leopard print paint scheme applied in 2007 to mark the type's retirement from RAF service. The squadron is distinguished in several way...

Re: Lakenheath "Excalibur VII"

Great set from the end of a golden era for aircraft spotting. Must surely have been the swansong of the Torrejon Vipers cos they relocated to Italy at the beginning of the '90s. I was under the impression that the Torrejon jets(Block 30), went back Stateside and went to various ANG units. While the...

Excellent, as always, Arnold; esp liking WT347 in 3 Sqn mks. Those with the black fuselage band will be 16 Sqn. Also those must be the first Buccs to arrive @ Laarbruch.

RIAT 2001 - A few more scans

Capercaillie's excellent recent post inspired me to 'get around' to scanning my own negs of this show as well as rediscovering the programme (priced @ £6 - dread to think what they cost these days). The main theme was flying training but I thought the line-up was a bit light with only the Hungarian ...

Re: Cottesmore RIAT 2001 - large post

Superb selection from what was a great show. That Papyrus Hunter pic really is a bit special. I attended on the Saturday when it was really hot. Light conditions were ok in the morning but in the afternoon the sky turned milky and the flying shots suffered as a result. Highlights for me were those H...
