I will leave others to recommend a scanner but there is more military activity in the south west than you realise. For example helicopters from Yeovilton and Culdrose and transport aircraft plus fast jets at high level all very receivable in Exeter. I would definitely recommend you buy a scanner for...

It certainly used to be the case that many of the Navy Hawk pilots were civilian though with a military fast jet background.
I guess they will struggle to find another role, at least in the South West.
