Re: South West (USA) wanderings, March 2024

Love the black Hornet. Had to look twice at it, as the black panels looked like canards and I thought it was some sort of test airframe.

Apaches at Otterburn.

I headed down to Otterburn on Wednesday to get the 2 Apaches that were working Spadeadam. The weather was rank rotten, but did provide some nice vortices from the rotor tips. 1 https://i.postimg.cc/wx5Dr3N1/01.jpg 2 https://i.postimg.cc/6qKn3xk6/02.jpg 3 https://i.postimg.cc/SKXW1rL4/03.jpg 4 https:...

Is 11 sqn involved?
Also if anyone knows the inside leg measurements of the pilots, that would be useful.

Re: Nellis AFB Red Flag 24-1

Since the Typhoon fleet is generally devoid of any Sqn markings, have these been added for going out there?

Re: Mallet Blow exercises ??

Heard the Bucc story before and can understand how it happened. There was an old 50's style bin lorry on the range that was one of the targets. It was usually the main target and it was painted in large black and white checks. Unfortunately the FAC's caravan was also painted in large black and whit...

It all depends on what you call low level.
The RAF officially class low level as anything below 2,000ft.
I know that, but for me, if it's not down to 250 feet or lower it doesn't count. :P

Recognise a few of those names Pete, also Keith from Maryport(?), sadly no longer with us. Tristram was a top bloke, I think he rejoined the RAF as a reservist Air Traffic Controller and did a tour in the Falklands. There was also at one point, a Para Major FAC, Scottish bloke, looked a bit menacing...

Re: Mallet Blow exercises ??

The previously mentioned Apache going through Alwinton on 17 Jan 09. I was standing in the area of the red flag when from the right this Apache came out of the Coquet valley. I fired off a few shots as it approached the gully then dashed over to the edge of the gully and I couldn't even see the whol...

Re: Mallet Blow exercises ??

I remember when we went down the hill at the end of the day to the car looking at where he went and thinking it would be sporty taking a helicopter through there! I actually got an Apache going low through there, and the rumour was Harry was in it. I couldn't make out if it was him or not from the ...

Swift visit to the valley.

Shock, horror, I actually got something in the Moffat valley today. Spotted these two on adsb going to leuchars in the morning and got a few distant shots as they passed to the North of Hawick. Betting on them leaving Leuchars in the afternoon I headed to Crook Hill, hoping to catch them. I hadn't s...

Re: Mallet Blow exercises ??

I did quite a few Mallet Blows at Otterburn and the camera gear wasn't as good as it is now, it was all film and manual focusing back then. Also got more than a few from Spade of MB's and general FAC days stashed away in the slide collection. I may dig them out some day and digi them, but at approx ...
