Re: Prestwick to host Voyager fleet (Brize Runway works)

I wasn't suggesting using Honington now, rather the USAF used an RAF base for a bolthole many years ago so hopefully the USAF would be willing to extend the same courtesy by allowing use of Fairford.

Re: Prestwick to host Voyager fleet (Brize Runway works)

Surprised they couldn't have used Fairford, is only down the road and would be plenty of space for the USAF still to have deployments with the Voyagers in there. Unless the C-17s and/or A400s are going there and all three would take up too much space for the USAF's liking. RAF Honington hosted 48th ...

Re: LN Strike Eagles going home

Hi all, It was said earlier in this thread "they are building another large ramp in the old 493rd shelter area as we speak." Does anyone know which side of the taxiway is the new ramp being built in the old 493rd FS shelter area - trees/road side or other side of the taxiway? Anyone any idea what's ...

Re: Exercise Iniochos 2025

Unless I missed something elsewhere on the thread he asked about the whole exercise.

"Does anyone know if there has been any action in the gorge during the exercise. Usually quieter but didn’t know if completely dead or not."

Thanks for the info.

Re: Mildenhall KC-135s to go low level regularly!

I mentioned the 22nd ARW doing low level special ops refuelling in my enquiry. 100th ARW said that only they and the Weapons School do low level at the moment. The above article on the 22nd ARW is from 2019 if memory serves. Seems surprising they wouldn't do that any more but can only pass on what t...

It all depends on what you call low level.
The RAF officially class low level as anything below 2,000ft.

Re: Mildenhall KC-135s to go low level regularly!

Maybe they should read up on what happened to the Valiant when it was forced to go low level. Cracks in the main spar resulted in the fleet being scrapped. Pounding the Mildenhall traffic pattern at low altitude isn't quite the same as high speed over turbulent terrain. It wouldn't surprise me if t...

Re: Mildenhall KC-135s to go low level regularly!

Interesting to read and see how that pans out. No lower than 1,000ft to mitigate risks to crews, aircraft, and the general population. When you read it, it's a bit misleading - It's not really "regular" at once a month, for the first 3 months of 2024, potentially scaling to 2 per month. I get the r...

Re: Mallet Blow exercises ??

I grew up in Aberdeen and for most of the 80s was too young to drive. Did give a little thought at the time to low level but there are hundreds of valleys in Scotland and not knowing the routes the thought was you could sit on a random hill for days and see nothing. Plus Lossie, Kinloss and Leuchars...

Re: Mallet Blow exercises ??

Bought the Low Down guide which was brilliant and was a great source of info. Before that went to Spade a few times and air bases during Elder Forests etc and saw lots of great low-level airfield attacks - B-52 low-level attacks on Leuchars were particularly memorable. Great to hear the memories fro...

Re: Mallet Blow exercises ??

Hi, has anyone got a copy of Unseen Airshows they would be willing to sell? I wrote Unseen Airshows back in the early 90s - there is essentially nothing relevant in it anymore - but still have a few tucked away. Lowdown I did a few years later Hi Andy, was more just from a general interest point of...
