617 Squadron "The Dambusters" 65th Anniversary Raid |
On this day in 1943 nineteen Lancaster bombers took off from RAF Scampton. Their targets that night was three primary dams called the Möhne, Sorpe and Eder Dams. These were located in the Ruhr valley region of Germany. Three other dams were marked as alternative targets. These were the Lister, Ennerpe and the Diemel Dams. The Squadron was formed of Commonwealth Pilots who were hand picked by Wing Commander Guy Gibson. The Squadron trained for six weeks around various parts of the UK in terms of low level flying over Lakes, Dams and through Valleys. The Derwent Valley and Dam in Derbyshire was one of those locations that was used to practice. Sixty Five years on a lone Lancaster from the Battle of Britain Memorial flight flew low level through the Derwent Valley and over the Dam to mark the anniversary. This was then followed by two Tornado GR4's from todays 617 Squadron. With the remainder of the Battle of Britain making their flypast in terms of a Spitfire, Hurricane and a Dakota. Such a fitting tribute not only for the fifty three of the one hundred thirty three that didn't make it home but also for the only last living pilot of the raids Les Monroe.

G-VULC/XH558 arrives at RAF Coningbsy |
|
Arriving in front of a large number of enthusiasts was XH558. The Avro Vulcan B.2B departed Bruntingthorpe in Leicestershire, and made another test flight where she then flew high above the runway before returning later on to land. The last time XH558 was at RAF Coningsby was in 1992. Again like RAF Cottesmore, RAF Coningsby was also home of the Vulcan but only for two years. A photo shoot took place the next day whereby the Vulcan shared the stage with the Lancaster of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight (BBMF) and a Typhoon. The Vulcan conducted some more compass swing tests as the previous tests at RAF Cottesmore met with a technical problem. XH558 departed back to Bruntingthorpe on Friday the 9th with all it's tests completed and the paperwork has been submitted to the CAA for approval and a permit to fly.

XH558 arrives at RAF Cottesmore |
Monday saw XH558 conduct its second test flight, and reach another milestone to obtain its certificate from the CAA. At 14:36L, XH558 using the callsign Marshall 1 thundered down Bruntingthorpe runway and took to the skies once more filling the sky with it's distinctive shape. The purpose of this test was to ensure that all airworthy checks were completed and then make it's way to RAF Cottesmore for calibration with the Compass Swing. Many people were at RAF Cottesmore to see XH558 flyover and head to towards Norwich for its planned air testing. However things didn't go quite to plan, and the crew encountered a problem. A warning light appeared on the console panel, indicating a fire. This was then resolved. Then another warning light appeared and after following the standard procedures the crew called a MAYDAY. With many enthusiasts listening in on the airband radios fearing the worst. The crew reported into Bruntingthorpe to prepare for an emergency landing. RAF Cottesmore returned over the frequency stating that they were better prepared and the descision was made for the Vulcan to land at Cottesmore. At 16:20L XH558 landed safely at the 04 end of Cottesmore. And stopped centre of the runway where a visual check from the Tower and emergency crews was then taken place. The crew then taxied to the 22 end followed by emergency fire and ambulance crews towards the visitors ramp. Eighty percent of the flight test was completed and the Vulcan was ready to take part of being calibrated by the compass swing. |

RAF Mildenhall to become a temporary home to Incrilik 728th Air Mobility Squadron |
More than Two Hundred Airmen and Eight C-17
Globemaster III aircraft will call RAF Mildenhall home for the next two
months while the runway at Incirlik Air Base, Turkey, undergoes renovation.
The first wave of about Seventy Airmen touched down at RAF Mildenhall on 26th February from their home
station of Travis Air Force Base, Californa. Normally, crews and jets from Travis deploy to Incirlik to perform heavy airlift in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom as the 817th Expeditionary Airlift Squadron - part of the 385th Expeditionary Airlift Group. However, the 10,000 foot runway there is scheduled for comprehensive repairs to both its concrete slabs and sealant between them, according to Lt. Col. Ann Stefanek, 39th Air Base Wing Public Affairs officer. The repairs will be completed in two separate phases, tentatively scheduled from March 7th to April 22nd. Meanwhile, the 385th EAG deployed airlift mission will continue from the local tarmac. "It's been great - everyone has welcomed us nicely," said Lt. Col. Rick Williamson, 817th EAS director of operations. "Kudos to the 727th (Air Mobility Squadron) - They have been in daily contact since we hit the ground, making sure we have everything we need. I'm thrilled with the reception we received, especially after a 13-hour flight." Servicing the additional aircraft and providing for more than Two Hundred additional Airmen is no small task. Ramp and cargo storage space will be a commodity during the C-17 stay. Also, every aspect of daily living, like housing, food, and transportation, must be taken into consideration. "We will provide maintenance and aerial port support," Maj. Leonel Gonzalez, 727th AMS director of operations said. "Our maintainers will launch and recover the C-17 missions and will keep the planes in full mission capable status. Our aerial port will download 747s and transfer the cargo onto the C-17s. The aerial port process includes planning the C-17 loads based on the available cargo and loading the planes. We will use the cargo yard to store the cargo that cannot be immediately loaded. It will change our cargo flow significantly." Support personnel are also being flown in from Incirlik's 728th Air Mobility Squadron to augment the force, but the majority of support services will be shouldered by Airmen at Mildenhall. Although eight of the C-17s will be operating from Mildenhall, only three or four will be on the ground at any given time. Transiting 747s should only be on the ground for the amount of time it takes to transfer cargo - a few hours at most. That increase in aircraft traffic is in addition to Mildenhall's normal transient operations, significantly increasing the need for material like fuel. "Our average amount of fuel delivered to each C-17 that landed at Mildenhall this year has been just over 16,000 gallons," said Senior Master Sgt. Herbert Welday III, 100th Logistics Readiness Squadron Fuels Management Flight operations section chief. "You can multiply 16,000 times the number of flights a day, times seven days a week as an estimate of how much extra fuel we'll need." The most important customers - U.S. Forces in Southwest Asia dependent on supplies airlifted by the 817th EAS - should not be impacted by the temporary relocation. Despite the challenges of adding a heavy airlift capability to Mildenhall'salready impressive air refueling, aerial port, special operations, and intelligence missions, the similarities between the two bases makes Mildenhall a natural choice for the temporary bed down. "RAF Mildenhall has an important transient aircraft support mission already, which is highlighted by our ability to temporarily support the 385 AEG's airlift mission," said Col. Eden Murrie, 100th ARW commander. "In fact, there are many parallels between our mission and Incirlik's - both bases have a critical aerial port mission supported by aircraft from all over the world. Mildenhall is perfect for this kind of operation." Source: RAF Mildenhall Website. |

BAe Systems Hawk Mk 128 Takes off from Brough |
Historic days for British Aircraft companies are few and far between now, but today was one of those days. BAe Systems as we know have been recently producing the Nimrod MRA4, Typhoon and the new Hawk AJT. Some what a common sight for those around the BAe Warton. |
| But for one small town in East Yorkshire, the sight of a Hawk taking off in to the skies of Yorkshire will soon become a regular occurance. As today at Brough, the first Hawk took off from BAe Brough. ZJ951 or production code HNDA successfully completed its first flight from Brough, and after flight and engine systems testing over the North Sea, landed at BAe Warton thirty one minutes after take-off! The whole flight operation was a resounding success proving both the quality of the product and the commitment of the staff has put Brough back on the aviation map. Notams have now been issued whereby two aircraft will be departing BAe Brough a month. |
Thanks to Pat Hamlet for this information along with the photos of the Hawk departing Brough and thanks to Mickey for the photos of the Hawk arriving at Warton. |

The distance between the Airfield and the range is Thirty Miles of open farm land and fields. Thus can cause serious injury or possible death. Therefore the RAF have issued a statement, that if anyone does find it, they should not touch it and inform the Police immediately. |

Dean "Taliban" Tabreham proves the RAF are the best at Marshalling Aircraft |
AN RAF ground crew man has become a video star — break-dancing as he directs £25million Tornado jets. Dean Tabreham, 28 , was filmed larking around as he guided Top Gun pilots and their 1,000mph GR4 bombers taxiing on the tarmac during a Nato training exercise. The five-minute video has zoomed around the Ministry of Defence on email, causing some computers to crash because it takes up a huge slice of memory. |
In one sequence, Senior Aircraftman Tabrehan dons gigantic false hands — like those worn by madcap comic Kenny Everett — to marshal the jets. In another, he does a break-dancing routine as one of the Tornado’s red-hot turbo jet engines passes just inches over his head. |
Last night RAF top brass insisted Dean would not be disciplined over his antics.
A senior officer said: “The video has become cult viewing and shows great enterprise and sense of humour.
“There was no danger at all to any RAF personnel.”
Dean, a member of the RAF’s elite 12 bomber squadron, was taking part in a Nato tactical leadership exercise at Florennes Air Base, Belgium. |
The squadron, which is based at RAF Lossiemouth, Scotland, was being taught how to operate with other Nato airforces as a “mixed attack package”.The video starts by showing how other nations’ ground crews marshal jets.
After the more traditional Americans, Spanish, Germans, Italians and Dutch. Dean hits the tarmac.
He kicks off with his Everett-style hands and brings his Tornado out while dancing to the song YMCA, doing all the actions — and fitting in the correct marshal signals at the same time. |
After another song he performs a series of backflips and break-dancing moves with the Tornado wingtip passing just over his head.
He next entices a Tornado out of its slot to the backing of Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
And finally, dressed like one of the runners in the 118 TV ads, he warms his hands on the exhaust of a passing fighter. Dean is a senior aircraft technician who works on the flight line and he and his team are known as “Lineys”.
A RAF insider said: “The Lineys have a great rapport with the Tornado crews who they see off and see back in on missions.
“They like to send them off with a smile on their faces to help alleviate combat nerves on missions over Iraq.”
|
Dean’s antics were turned into a video and a whip-round among Nato squadrons on the exercise raised more than £1,000 for Cancer Research UK.
An MoD spokesman told The Sun: “Dean is a top bloke who has been tearing up the tarmac with his moves.
“He’s famous on the unit and proves RAF marshals are the best in the world.” |
Dean has since appeared on GMTV, has been saluted by 118 118 in their daily comic strip in the Metro Newspaper and was also interviewed by his hometown radio station - BBC Radio Nottingham |
