Marham viewing

Post by reaper493 » Tue Jan 16, 2018 9:40 am

Morning all,

I’ve never been to Marham, for one reason or another, but I’m hoping to go next month.

I’ve seen form the guide on PB photos there’s only really 2 photo locations at the end of each runway, can any of the locals give any pointers?

Can you get up to the fence, or do you need to stay by the road side?

Are steps needed if you can get to the fence?

Thanks in advance,

Mike

Hiya

You can get to the fence and ladders are not required.

Marham isn't the best for viewing, that's why I like it  Viewing guides can be found here viewtopic.php?f=51&t=28518

Take a good book with you, or have a backup plan like the Heritage centre or Lakenheath etc. You're looking at 10 movements a day at most, 12(B) drawdown is underway, they haven't flown under a 12(B) call sign so far this year. Although the pilots have been up under the generic Marham **

Apparently people on station are finally coming to terms with the station needing a official viewing area once the F-35s arrive. Can't see it ever happening, the MOD don't have the money or the land to do one. Unless one of the farms can be persuaded to give up land or turn a section into one

Fence at 24 end is (was) a good location but a bit of a hike from the road. In Aug 2017 the MoD Security were patrolling outside the base perimeter and I was advised that they did not welcome anyone going up to the fence and viewing should be from road only. I haven't tried it since then - maybe different now.

David.
They (security) are generally ok with you at the fence.

DO NOT walk to it via the track under the landing lights, or cross under the lights at any time whilst near the fence!
Or you will get a visit from base security.

And please respect the land owners property and crop on the field etc.

All the best

Trev.

Sure does stink Mark, if you are sensible you shouldn’t have any problems with base security. Ive only ever been spoken to at the 06 end.

I agree with Teejay and Liam,i have never had any trouble ate the chalk lane side of the base although as tj sais it is a bit of a trek down to the gap in the hedge but well worth it once you get there.as teejay said go down the edge of the field and not the track and as with all farmland be respectful of crops and don't park in the way as tractors sometimes need access. thinking about it now i was once"moved on"by a patrol in a landrover when the tornados hadn't been there very long but that was from the layby on the hill on the swaffham to downham road[also a good spot as they sometimes bank over you once they're airborne].Mark.

The fenceline at the 24 end was a great location for pics and if you were sensible and didn't stray under the landing lights you would be allowed to stay.
As I mentioned last year, Security now do not want anyone anywhere along that fenceline. Last Thursday Security again showed up along the public road at 24 end and drove across the field to warn off 2 people by the fence. I spoke to the security guys afterwards and they reconfirmed that anywhere along the fence (or indeed in the field near the fence) was out of bounds. Is the base anticipating a mad influx of F-35 watchers and thus sending out an early warning ? If that is the case, the hardened Tornado fans will be the real losers.

That's a great shame,i suppose you're right they are getting jumpy about anyone getting too close to those hideous hangar queens once they arrive.i am old enough to remember when coningsby built a huge 9 foot fence around most of the base when the Tornado F3's took over from the Phantoms so lets hope they don't do that at Marham!.

Ive heard rumours that they were looking at a viewing area as they know there will be alot of people turning up when the f35s turn up and there was rumours about the fence round the base being to small and the americans werent to happy with it appearently which could mean a new fence

A viewing area was in the original plans at Marham I believe, but funding wasn’t there for it. So doubtful it will happen.
Also I think a new security fence is inevitable eventually.
