I think with the extra squadron of F-35's and the additional transiting traffic (I assume they will get a fair bit of what Mildenhall had in Tankers and Airlifters) it will be close to bursting. There was a piece in the local paper a while back saying that it will be close to a 24/7 base when Mildenhall does eventually close up.
Cheers,

They are to be based in Germany.

Does anyone know if the RC-135’s are still moving to Fairford?

Has anyone heard if Mildenhall's closure is later than 2024/or not at all; I increasingly doubt closure. The Germans don't like noisy Ospreys, they might prefer to delay tankers until the KC 135 replacement and Trump was not their flavor of the month even before the "Trade War". The German Government, a stitched up group of disparate parties, appears to be disintegrating making agreement less likely. Meanwhile there is still the problem of RC135/Lakenheath arrester cables or the cost of upgrading Fairford might well exceed the refurbishment of Mildenhall; their also running out of bases.
Coincidently Fairford's DOD base manager is being replaced with a Lt Colonel and Trump today announced a military space force. Remember the NASA Space Shuttle was partly funded by DOD, flew military payloads and Fairford was a shuttle diversion runway.

Last briefing I attended was told that 2024 is still the estimated date for moving out of Mildenhall.

2 squadrons moving to fairford as requested by the USAF last week are the 95th and the 488th just waiting for official approval by HM government. Fairford upgrade obviously very much a go and on track.

USAF also spending another 100 million on fairford installing a DABS warehouse and new bomb dumps on base.

Today's news is that the Trump Administration is doing a study to reduce or even withdraw the US military presence in Germany and instead building up more military presence in Poland. The subject will be on the agenda of the forthcoming NATO summit. Perhaps another chance to keep Mildenhall in the active US-inventory...

Well the Ghost Elephant in the Room has finally gone public. Trump might pull US Forces out of Europe if the rest of NATO does not spend more on defending themselves. Why should the USA pay to defend Europe, ongoing trade war does not help. Nothing is for ever and the USA did pull out in 1945, apart from the German occupation, to only come back with NATO formation. Even if no pull out infrastructure spend for rebasing might go on hold or there could be a selective pull out from underspending countries. For instance US could move from Germany to Poland.
