Re: Marham Wg C/Sign "Bulkhead" (ModeS BLKHD etc)
Presumably Bulkhead is reference to the Sqns attack on the Tirpitz and the fact they used to fight over a part of the bulkhead with 617....

31 Squadron occasionally use the call sign PRIMUS & INDICUM after their Latin motto
In Caelum Indicum Primus (First into Indian Skies)

Re: Marham Wg C/Sign "Bulkhead" (ModeS BLKHD etc)
IX(B) started using Bulkhead more regularly after the 65th anniversary (12/11/2009) bombing comp at Wainfleet, which was won by 617 Sqn or the Dim B*stered as IX(B) and others nicknamed them. Also when they lost use of Batman
Deathray was/ is? II(AC) Sqn call sign, they started using it during their war week back in 2012 building up for Op Herrick
Can't say I've ever heard Bugatti
Only generic call sign used by Marham squadrons is Marham other than the RAFAIR & ASCOT deployment call signs

Why did they lose Batman? Was it due that executive jet company using it?

Yep. ICAO registered callsigns trump national military callsign lists.

Re: Marham Wg C/Sign "Bulkhead" (ModeS BLKHD etc)
Thanks All. Interesting thread.
I always thought it was Bat that IX(B) used.
But I recall their hangar pre CMU/ATTAC days was referred to as "Gotham city" so Batman would make sense. But all this was spawned from Bat on Sqn emblem anyway.
Cheers

Re: Marham Wg C/Sign "Bulkhead" (ModeS BLKHD etc)
IX(B) Ops building was referred to as Gotham, not sure if that's still the same since they relocated with the other squadrons to the Southern HAS complex

One of the squadron pilots told me during a tour the squadron called the HAS caves carrying on the theme

Re: Marham Wg C/Sign "Bulkhead" (ModeS BLKHD etc)
II(AC) only started using Vampire when they transitioned to Typhoon
II(AC) used in the latter time at Marham
Deathray (Started using in 2012)
Spartan
Chieftain (They used to have a Chieftain tank near their Ops building at Marham a nod to the Army Cooperation heritage)
Sultan (Wasn't used after 2008?)
Valkyrie (Started using in 2009?)

The ops building doesnt have any signs saying Gotham on the new HAS site but there is a Welcome to Gotham sign just outside the IX (B) sqn buildingGary wrote:IX(B) Ops building was referred to as Gotham, not sure if that's still the same since they relocated with the other squadrons to the Southern HAS complex
